Overview:

The Director of Investment Accounting leads a team to produce quarterly statutory reports, including investment footnotes, schedules, and annual audited statements. Additionally, the Director provides guidance and expertise to business partners in matters related to the investment accounting platform. The Director will be a key member of the team responsible for replacing our investment accounting system (MAXIMIS). They will work closely with the project team and vendor to design and test the functionality of the replacement and coordinate modifications where needed to ensure the new accounting system will meet our GAAP, STAT and Tax reporting requirements. Once the implementation is completed, the Director will manage the maintenance of the investment accounting system, in the context of GAAP, STAT and TAX accounting data and entries, and manage the accounting relationship with our service provider.  The position is based in Hartford, CT.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the production of quarterly statutory footnotes and interrogatories as well as investment portions of the annual audited statutory financial statements. Includes oversight for approximately 20 legal entities. Also, oversee other reporting needs such as management reporting and various compliance reporting.

  • Take an active role in the implementation of a new investment accounting platform. Responsibilities include:

    • Testing functionality and comparing results to the current accounting platform.

    • Ensure current state SOX controls are maintained/strengthened.

    • Communicate to investment accounting how to use the functionality present in the accounting system.

    • Collaborate with the accounting team in developing and implementing new process flows and controls, especially the automation of manual processes.

  • Assist in maintaining the investment accounting system infrastructure to ensure proper GAAP, STAT and TAX accounting entries are generated in an automated fashion.

  • Consult with management on future accounting changes and recommend infrastructure requirements to account for these updates.

  • Troubleshoot production issues collaborating with accounting, operations, and IT production support to ensure that investment activity is processed in a way that reflects proper accounting treatment.

  • Coordinate the accounting system upgrades and functional enhancements with the vendor and the accounting team. Collaborate with accounting, IT and the developer to assist in projects related to the system functionality, accounting requirements and processing efficiencies.

  • Lead process improvement initiatives utilizing functionality in our investment accounting system, TM1, and other platforms to create efficiencies in our workflow streams.

  • Coach and develop a team of accountants, providing regular feedback. Promote behaviors identified by The Hartford. Identify and lead process improvements and improve controls.

  • Support a variety of ad hoc requests to assist in investment portfolio management decisions.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years of accounting experience, preferably within investment/insurance industry.  

  • Strong control mindset with a knowledge of both GAAP, STAT, and tax accounting.

  • Highly motivated individual, team player, and ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. 

  • Experience managing people, with a demonstrated ability to effectively coach and develop a team.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 

  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills.

  • Proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint; TM1, Wdesk, and Copilot is a plus.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$126,400 - $189,600
