This is an opportunity to work at RBC Insurance Active Data Platform team with a group of professionals dedicated to deliver solution to Insurance business and clients. We are all in with Agile development, DevOps, Open Source, Software as a Service (SaaS) and modern tools and processes. We are seeking an experienced and innovative Director of Data Engineering who will lead the strategy, architecture, and delivery of Insurance Cloud Data Lakehouse using Snowflake, enabling advance analytics, regulatory reporting, and AI-driven insights for the Insurance business. This role combines deep technical leadership with business partnership – bridging enterprise data engineering and insurance domain understanding to accelerate data-drive decision-making.

Our applications are used by RBC staff and clients making your contributions highly impactful and visible, directly contributing to the success of RBC. We deliver digitally enabled applications that are both internal and internet facing. We build cloud data lakehouse, stable web, and back-end applications which are resilient, scalable and high performance that avoids failure and focused on delivering best client experience. We continuously update our tech skills and upgrade our platforms to match industry standards.

What will you do?

  • Collaborate closely with Insurance business leaders, product managers, data scientists, and IT stakeholders across various lines to translate data needs into engineering priorities and deliver trusted, high-quality data assets.

  • Define and own the data engineering roadmap aligned with enterprise data strategy and the business transformation agenda/roadmap.  

  • Design and implement a scalable, secure, and governed data Lakehouse on Snowflake, integrating structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data across distribution systems.

  • Lead the technical discussion, collaborate with enterprise architects to drive the design and development of target architecture for the Cloud Data Lakehouse, integrating Snowflake, dbt, Kafka/streaming, and data models/governance layers.

  • Oversee the design and deployment of Snowflake-based data Lakehouse, partner with business to prioritized data domains (Policy, Claims, Risk, Customer, Broker, etc. ).

  • Enable data sharing and consumption models for analytics, Power BI dashboards, and AM/ML applications.

  • Modernize legacy data environments (on-premises warehouses, siloed data marts) into a unified cloud platform supporting real-time analytics, self-service BI, and AL/ML workloads.

  • Establish data engineering standards for the Data Transformation Journey, ensure data quality in collaboration with Data Governance, Architecture, and Data Consumers. .

  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in Snowflake platform, AI/ML, particularly in Agentic AI and process automation, and evaluate their applicability and potential for the insurance sector.

  • Establish and enforce robust data quality checks and monitoring frameworks, ensure the resilience, uptime, and disaster recovery capabilities of all production systems.

What do you need to succeed?

Must Have

  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering, with a focus on modern data stacks, Snowflake, and cloud technologies

  • 3+ years of experience in a leadership role, managing and guiding high-performing data engineering teams

  • Hands-on experience with Snowflake, including data modeling, data warehousing, and data governance

  • Experience with cloud computing platforms, such as AWS, GCP, or Azure

  • Strong understanding of data engineering principles, including data pipelines, architectures, and workflows

  • Experience with data governance, security, and compliance frameworks and regulations

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge of data engineering tools, such as Apache Beam, Apache Spark, or AWS Glue

  • Experience with DevOps practices and tools, such as CI/CD pipelines and containerization

  • Knowledge of data science and machine learning concepts, and experience working with data scientists and data analysts

  • Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems, such as Git

  • Certification in Snowflake, cloud computing, or data engineering

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering or a related quantitative field

  • Master’s or Ph.D. preferred
