Position: DevOps Engineer, London Market
Reporting to: Head of Platform Engineering, London Market
The London Market tech team is a modern, agile technology department seeking to work as closely as possible with our colleagues across the company to deliver true business value in an agile fashion. We are a group of engineers (data, software, test), data scientists and agile practitioners. We organise ourselves into chapters according to these professional disciplines. You would be joining our data engineering chapter.
From these chapters we build cross-functional squads aimed at delivering business value in particular areas. These are tight-knit Scrum teams working closely with product owners and business stakeholders to determine what insights are required and working to deliver them. This means our engineers must be passionate in applying technology to drive results and advocate for appropriate solutions.
We build teams that can get stuff done and deliver value incrementally to the business; teams that understand what agility really is and always looks to keep things simple and avoids excessive amounts of code. We adopt best practices in the cloud and understand the importance of DevOps to ensure we can easily build, deploy and monitor solutions when they go into production.
The Role
The primary focus for this role is to be a key and influential member of our You will be a member of a team which includes DevOps Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering & DevSecOps. As well as a member of a Platform Engineering squad which are responsible for the Continuous Improvement over our cloud and on-premises platforms. We look for opportunities to do things smarter, cheaper, quicker, and ensuring everything we do can be re-used by our development teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and maintain the pipelines for publishing code to Azure
- Oversee and coach squads in intra-day deployments mechanisms
- As part of the chapter drive the DevOps principles and culture across London Market squads
- Coach and influence engineers to DevOps maturity
- Oversee and direct the vendor DevOps and Infrastructure resources
- Create and maintain Azure infrastructure across all environments
- Propose and implement time-saving initiatives
- Create and maintain monitoring at all levels (infrastructure, app, data)
- Monitor issues and availability and ensure the correct escalation path is followed
- Monitor performance and propose improvements
- Implement auto-scaling of resources to meet the needs of the moment
- Collaborate with all London Market Chapters
- Help to commoditise cloud services where possible
- Identify engineering limits, bottlenecks and tipping points before they’re reached
Person Specification
Mandatory skillset:
- Experience of working as an engineer, working on solutions in Azure, GCP or hybrid cloud. Preferably with Azure DevOps.
- Experience with Terraform and Azure Resource Management Templates
- Knowledge of Cloud native, microservices, containerized systems, preferably with Kubernetes
- To have a strong desire for continuous improvement and an Agile way of working
Ideally in addition:
- Commercial hands-on software delivery, including either implementation and on-going systems administration experience in a previous role using a variety of technologies, or, build and deployment engineering with modern practices
- Sound experience in identifying, implementing and maintaining IT solutions / systems in regulated markets / industries
- Proven accountability for delivering technical components of both IT or commercial projects and on-going “BAU” programmes
- Ability to work as part of a small team that is part of a larger product division
- Proven communication and presentation skills
- Comfortable in a rapidly changing environment
- Able to articulate on processes and tools utilized to ensure quality, stability, performance, scalability, deployment, security, maintenance and documentation
- Knowledge and understanding of latest trends in DevOps methodologies, processes and tools, as well as emerging solutions and ability to apply them when appropriate
- Previous experience of application support and operations – understanding how to troubleshoot system issues and find a pragmatic solution in a timely manner
- A strong interest and awareness of all cloud providers and their services
- Some knowledge of the Insurance Market with Lloyd’s market experience particularly useful
- Creative, proactive, logical and innovative – you do not accept the status quo – and will push hard for innovation and automation
