The Department of Public Safety’s Executive Director’s Office is seeking a seasoned and strategic leader to serve as Deputy Director of Compliance and Discipline. This executive-level position plays a critical role in overseeing the disciplinary processes across all three of Denver’s uniformed safety agencies: the Denver Police Department, Denver Fire Department, and Denver Sheriff Department.
As a key advisor to the Executive Director, the Deputy Director will ensure accountability, transparency, and consistency in disciplinary matters. This role also serves as the primary liaison to the Office of the Independent Monitor, reinforcing the Department’s commitment to integrity and public trust.
Who We’re Looking For
We are seeking an experienced legal professional with a strong background in public safety, labor relations, or administrative law. The ideal candidate will be a confident decision-maker, skilled communicator, and trusted advisor who can navigate complex, high-stakes environments with professionalism and discretion.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the Department’s disciplinary review process, including case evaluations, recommendations, and drafting of disciplinary letters and orders.
Represent the Department in appellate proceedings and provide expert testimony as needed.
Serve as a strategic liaison to the Office of the Independent Monitor, ensuring open communication and collaboration.
Advise the Executive Director and Command Staff on disciplinary matters, policy development, and legal implications.
Develop and implement best practices to improve the efficiency and fairness of disciplinary processes.
Present public reports on use-of-force incidents and other disciplinary actions.
Lead special projects, policy reviews, and strategic initiatives across the Department.
Supervise and mentor a team of professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, growth, and continuous improvement.
Provide guidance and resolution strategies for employee-supervisor disputes.
Support training initiatives to ensure consistent application of disciplinary standards across all safety agencies.
Analyze operational and performance trends to identify key focus areas, conduct targeted audits in those areas, and drive continuous improvement initiatives based on findings.
What You Bring
Proven experience in legal, compliance, or disciplinary roles within a public safety or paramilitary environment.
Deep understanding of uniformed disciplinary processes, investigations, and corrective actions.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and persuasively.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and credibility across diverse stakeholders.
A proactive, customer-focused mindset with a sense of urgency and commitment to service excellence.
Below are the minimum requirements used to determine eligibility for this position:
Education Requirement: Bachelor's Degree in a related field based on a specific position(s)
Experience Requirement: Five (5) years of leadership experience, which must have included director-level management responsibilities. One (1) year of management experience must include budget and fiscal oversight responsibility, evaluation of business processes, and policy and decision-making experience with planning and organizing multiple programs, pro-jects, operations or functions.
Education & Experience Equivalency: Two (2) years of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post high school education. Additional appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
Licensure & Certification: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
