At Hiscox, we’re offering a fantastic opportunity for an Associate Data Scientist to join our award-winning London Market Data Science Team, a team recognised for its pioneering collaboration with Google to deliver the market’s first AI-enhanced lead underwriting solution.

This role is ideal for someone early in their data science career who’s eager to learn, grow, and make a meaningful impact. You’ll be supported by experienced data scientists and engineers, and work closely with business stakeholders to deliver actionable insights and scalable solutions.

You’ll be encouraged to ask questions, explore new ideas, and build your confidence in translating data into commercial value. This role offers a unique chance to develop both your technical skills and your business acumen in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

You’ll be mentored by senior data scientists, exposed to a wide range of tools and technologies, and encouraged to take ownership of your development as you grow into a confident and capable data scientist.

This is an ideal role for an individual who is passionate about the use of analytics to influence decisions and is keen to learn more about delivering value through the use of data. You will be expected to conceptualise new ways of doing things, communicate vision simply and effectively to key stakeholders, and see these visions through to implementation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leverage industry standards, emerging methodologies and empirical research to develop critical inputs to business information, and helping business leaders develop innovative approaches to driving their business.
  • Develop predictive and prescriptive models that inform decision-making across the London Market business.
  • Assist in designing and implementing analytical solutions using internal and external data sources.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, data engineers, and cross-functional teams to deliver insights and scalable solutions.
  • Help communicate analytical findings in a clear, business-relevant way to non-technical audiences.
  • Contribute to the growth of Hiscox’s data culture by promoting evidence-based thinking and analytical best practices.
  • Participate in Agile working practices and contribute to cross-disciplinary projects.

Person Specification and Technical Skills:

  • A degree in a STEM or closely related field, or equivalent experience. A further Degree is a plus.
  • A strong grasp of foundational statistics is essential.
  • Some experience with data science tools and techniques, either through academic projects, internships, or personal work.
  • Familiarity with Python, R, SQL, or other analytical tools.
  • A strong interest in machine learning, statistics, and solving business problems with data.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn from others.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Willingness to learn best practice in software development.
  • Experience with large language models and prompting, GCP experience is a plus.  
  • Knowledge of insurance is an advantage but not essential.
