The role:

As a Data Analyst within Morningstar’s Performance & Portfolio Operations team, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of investment performance data and portfolio information. You will work cross-functionally with data research teams, operations, and client service groups to maintain high data quality standards for thousands of funds and portfolios globally.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze performance calculations and methodologies to ensure compliance with industry standards.
  • Manage escalations and troubleshoot data anomalies in collaboration with data providers and internal teams.
  • Develop and maintain automated validations, reports, and analytical tools to improve data workflows.
  • Partner with IT and database teams to optimize data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior analysts and contribute to team knowledge sharing and training.
  • Support month-end and quarter-end close cycles for performance data delivery and audit processes.
  • Collaborate with product managers and client-facing teams to ensure timely communication around data issues and enhancements.
  • Participate in continuous process improvement initiatives using methodologies like Lean Six Sigma.

 

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in financial data analysis, preferably within mutual funds, ETFs, or portfolio operations.
  • Proficiency in SQL and Excel for data querying, transformation, and analysis.
  • Understanding of portfolio performance concepts (time-weighted returns, money-weighted returns), NAV, and dividend mechanics.
  • Experience with data quality frameworks, anomaly detection, and root cause analysis.
  • Knowledge of investment fund structures, pricing policies, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data issues for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
