About the Job

The Data Architect will define, maintain, and govern the syndicate’s enterprise data architecture. The role will evaluate and recommend the right technology stack, develop business cases, design practical solutions, and maintain key architecture artefacts. 

The Data Architect will also drive adherence to standards, integrate data architecture with the organisation’s risk framework, and provide oversight to ensure solutions deliver business value, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. 

What you’ll spend your time doing:

  • Define, document, and maintain the strategic data architecture roadmap, setting principles, standards, and target state. 
  • Evaluate and recommend data platforms and tools, balancing cost, risk, and business value. 
  • Support the development of business cases by setting out functional requirements, costs, benefits, risks, and dependencies. 
  • Own and maintain core architecture artefacts, including: 
  • Data architecture policy, standards, and guidelines 
  • Data classification and data domain models 
  • Data architecture blueprint and lifecycle management process 
  • Register of authoritative sources and data security model 
  • Develop and maintain data models (conceptual, logical, physical), data flows, and integration patterns. 
  • Translate business and regulatory requirements into end-to-end solution designs. 
  • Provide architectural oversight across ingestion, storage, processing, and consumption layers. 
  • Monitor and enforce adherence to standards, providing governance oversight and attestation. 
  • Govern exceptions to standards, qualifying issues, assigning remediation, and controlling risks. 
  • Maintain architecture dashboards and reports to visualise performance, flows, breaches, and exceptions. 
  • Work with business functions to identify architecture requirements for critical processes and data elements. 
  • Partner with IT, service providers, and vendors to deliver the data architecture blueprint. 
  • Coordinate with other data management capabilities (data governance, data quality, reporting) to ensure alignment. 
  • Contribute architectural input to strategic projects, including delegated authority, claims, finance, and regulatory reporting. 

What you’ll need:

Essential 

  • Significant experience in data architecture, with proven delivery in project and BAU environments. 
  • Strong knowledge of data platforms and architectures (cloud and on-premise), with ability to evaluate and recommend solutions (Azure, AWS, GCP, Snowflake, Databricks, SQL Server). 
  • Expertise in data modelling (conceptual, logical, physical), integration design, and lifecycle management. 
  • Experience of data risk and control frameworks, including data security and access control. 
  • Experience developing and maintaining architecture artefacts, policies, and standards. 
  • Ability to build business cases, including cost/benefit and risk analysis. 
  • Familiarity with metadata management, data classification, and authoritative sources. 
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, able to engage both technical and business leaders. 

Desirable 

  • London Market or wider insurance industry experience. 
  • Understanding of delegated authority and bordereaux processes. 
  • Familiarity with core policy/claims admin systems (e.g. Subscribe). 
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks (e.g. Solvency II, BCBS 239). 
  • Experience with data governance and architecture frameworks (TOGAF, DAMA, DCAM). 
  • Exposure to data catalogue and lineage tools (e.g. Purview, Collibra).
