Self-directed courses are a new experiential learning format at the University of Ottawa, aligned with the uOCompetencies framework and inspired by the SLICC model at the University of Edinburgh. Each Teaching Assistant (TA) will play a key role as a mentor to a maximum of 15 to 20 students, guiding them through the planning, implementation, and critical reflection of their project. This role is primarily mentorship-based.

Please note: This self-directed course is multi-faculty (Arts, Social Sciences, Telfer School of Management, and Health Sciences).

Responsibilities

  • Launch Workshop (5 hours): Co-facilitate an introductory workshop on self-directed courses and the uOCompetencies framework.

  • Personalized Support:

Assist students in defining, planning, and carrying out their experiential learning project. Provide five individual mentorship meetings (2.5 hours per student).

  • Evaluation of Deliverables:

Read and provide feedback on three deliverables: proposal, mid-term report, and final report (2.5 hours per student).

  • Active Participation:

Attend regular coordination meetings with the lead professor (approximately 10 hours). Participate in course evaluation mechanisms (reflective journal, survey, focus group).

  • Required Training:

Required Qualifications

  • Oral and written bilingualism (French and English).

  • Relevant training or experience in student support or professional development.

  • Good understanding of experiential learning or the uOCompetencies framework (an asset).
