Job Description
General Motors is seeking a Corporate Communications leader — a sharp, strategic communicator with exceptional judgment, media savvy, and a talent for shaping narratives that strengthen GM’s reputation. This role sits at the center of some of GM’s most visible and high-stakes communications efforts. You’ll help create and land enterprise-wide stories while helping the company navigate complex issues with agility and grace.
The ideal candidate is resourceful, savvy, and calm under pressure — able to anticipate risks, connect dots, and counsel with confidence. You know how to run sustained campaigns, not just one-off moments, and how to boil complex stories into tight, compelling key messages that differentiate GM and show the world what sets us apart.
What You’ll Do
You’ll drive strategic communications and reputation leadership, combining proactive storytelling with long-term thought leadership that advances GM’s position on innovation, economic impact, and American manufacturing. You’ll build integrated campaigns that elevate GM’s voice, reinforce our purpose, and engage audiences across channels.
Shape and elevate GM’s reputation through smart, cross-channel storytelling that reflects the broader news and cultural landscape.
Lead sustained communications campaigns that build momentum over time — not just one-off stories — to advance GM’s enterprise narrative.
Distill complex topics into clear, compelling messages that connect with media, employees, and the public while reinforcing GM’s business priorities.
Drive thought leadership, partnering with executives to position GM leaders as credible voices on innovation, technology, and the future of manufacturing.
Spot and pitch enterprise-level stories, from quick-turn opportunities to long-lead features, bringing together multiple parts of the business into cohesive, newsworthy narratives.
Experiment with emerging platforms and formats to amplify storytelling and extend reach beyond traditional media.
Build and sustain trusted media relationships with top-tier national, business, and lifestyle journalists.
Navigate complex issues with discretion and influence, securing impactful, high-profile coverage that moves GM’s reputation forward.
Be scrappy and tenacious, uncovering stories and building relationships across a highly matrixed organization.
Your Skills & Experience
10+ years of experience in communications, preferably within a high-profile corporate or agency setting.
Ability to proactively develop and drive strategic communications plans while managing tough news cycles calmly and quickly.
Strong storytelling skills and a track record of securing impactful, high-profile media coverage.
Excellent judgment — you know how to plan ahead to avoid a crisis and when to escalate issues.
Deep understanding of how business, media, and culture intersect to shape reputation.
Outstanding writing and media relations skills — you know comms is more than drafting statements, and you’re creative about finding new ways to engage.
Ability to navigate a large, complex organization and influence senior leaders effectively.
Calm, composed, and armed with a sense of humor — our work is serious, but our team likes to have fun along the way.
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to one of the locations (Detroit, MV, DC or NY) at a frequency dictated by the business.
