Position Description

Candidate is responsible for generating detailed product knowledge and cultivating client relationships in order to create a sales strategy in line with the bank's strategy. Candidate will also be leading a team of relationship managers (RMs) and will need to take on overall responsibility for delivering the results form the team.

Work includes:

  • Developing a deep understanding of client needs and expectations by ensuring regular contact and constantly researching appropriate sales solutions

  • Building working relationships with origination, trading, research, client services, and operations to ensure effective end to end client/product delivery

  • Operating within the relevant legal, regulatory and bank policy requirements

  • Identifying and contacting prospective clients and building relationships to generate future sales and repeat business

  • Guiding / coaching teams to do the above tasks and achieve targets for the Coverage team. Actively conduct client outreach through direct as well as in reach into the network relationship managers to generate more leads / revenues for Malaysia

Position Specific Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Relationship Management: Serve as the primary relationship manager for a portfolio of global corporate clients' subsidiaries and affiliates operating in Malaysia. This involves frequent engagement with senior management to understand their financial needs.

  • Business development: Develop and execute strategies to originate new business and increase market share within the assigned client portfolio. This includes achieving Bank’s profitability target including Assets/Liabilities/New Customers/Cross Sales target assigned to the team & individuals. 

  • Coordination with global teams: Act as a central point of contact, coordinating relationship managers and regional coverage teams to ensure a consistent, high-quality service for clients.

  • Credit analysis and risk management: Conduct credit analysis and manage risk for new and existing clients. This requires a strong understanding of both local and global financial regulations and policies.

  • Financial and portfolio management: Monitor and track portfolio revenue and performance against targets. Responsible for the overall profitability and strategic management of the assigned client base.

  • Team leadership: Support and guide junior staff, helping to develop talent within the coverage team. 

Key Competencies for Strategic Leader

Client and relationship management

  • Building and maintaining key relationships: Developing and nurturing strong, long-term relationships with senior executives of multinational clients' Malaysian subsidiaries.

  • Stakeholder engagement: Acting as a crucial intermediary between the local subsidiary, the global parent bank, and the bank's internal product and service teams.

  • Networking: Representing the bank within Malaysia's business community to build a network of potential referral sources and clients

Commercial banking and sales

  • Business development: Identifying and originating sales opportunities by proactively marketing a broad range of corporate banking, financial markets, and treasury products to multinational subsidiaries.

  • Cross-product knowledge: Possessing a strong understanding of a wide array of financial products, including trade and working capital, corporate finance, and treasury services, to meet client needs.

  • Market expertise: Providing clients with insights into the Malaysian market and its economic landscape to help them with their local business strategies. 

Financial and credit analysis

  • Credit risk management: Collaborating with credit risk teams to structure, negotiate, and execute credit requests, while ensuring proper due diligence and mitigation of potential risks.

  • Financial analysis: Possessing strong analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate the financial performance of clients and structure suitable solutions. 


Regulatory and risk compliance

  • Local and global regulation: Ensuring that both the bank and the client's transactions comply with Malaysia's financial services laws and regulations, as well as the global bank's internal policies.

  • Compliance coordination: Interacting with internal compliance teams to resolve any Anti-Money Laundering (AML) or other compliance-related issues that may arise with subsidiary clients.

  • Risk oversight: Providing oversight on risk and control assessments, especially regarding overseas branches and subsidiaries

Leadership and communication

  • Leadership skills: Managing complex client relationships and, depending on the organizational structure, potentially leading a team of junior bankers.

  • Effective communication: Having excellent communication and presentation skills to engage with and influence senior stakeholders, both internally and externally.

  • Team collaboration: Functioning as a dependable team player who can coordinate with multiple internal business partners and stakeholders. 

Your skills and experience:

  • Significant experience (usually 8–10+ years) in corporate or investment banking, particularly with coverage or relationship management for multinational clients.

  • Deep understanding of a broad array of corporate banking products, including cash management, trade, credit, and risk management solutions.

  • A strong grasp of local regulations in Malaysia, as well as global compliance standards (e.g., AML/KYC).

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills to build and maintain trust-based relationships with senior client decision-makers. 

  • Experience in credit application is must, trade related knowledge is preferred. 

  • Discipline related to timeline/deadline adherence and punctuality.

Education/ Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in finance, business or a related field

  • An advanced degree such as an MBA

  • Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal English and Bahasa Malaysia
