CMA is hiring a Controller for our Accounting & Finance Department in our Corporate Office. The Controller will oversee all aspects of the company’s financial management and reporting functions within a multidisciplinary engineering firm environment. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with GAAP, Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), and regulatory requirements, developing internal controls, and providing leadership and strategic insight to support organizational growth and operational efficiency. This role is key in partnering with executive leadership to guide financial strategy, improve profitability, enhance forecasting accuracy through data-driven insights and providing financial leadership to support long-term planning, system modernization, and organizational scalability. The ideal candidate is a proactive financial leader with a strong background in project-based accounting and experience in professional services industries such as engineering, architecture, or construction.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Develop and monitor financial and operational dashboards to track key performance indicators (KPIs) across departments.
  • Oversee ERP data integrity and collaborate with IT on system optimization and automation of reporting processes.
  • Ensure compliance with government contracting standards, including FAR cost principles, as applicable.
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and fixed assets.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Manage the monthly close process and ensure the timely reconciliation of all accounts.
  • Develop, implement, and manage financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard company assets and within the compliance of the FAR.

 

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the development of multi-year financial forecasts and scenario analyses to support strategic initiatives.
  • Monitor financial performance against budgets and partner with business unit and project leaders to provide variance analysis, trends, and recommendations for course correction.
  • Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with department heads and project managers.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations to senior leadership for financial decision-making.

 

Project Accounting & Cost Management

  • Ensure consistent project setup, contract compliance, and accurate revenue recognition under GAAP and firm policies.
  • Develop project profitability dashboards and lead monthly financial reviews with project management teams.
  • Maintain FAR audit readiness for project-based billing and indirect cost allocation.
  • Support project managers in tracking project financial performance, including billing, work-in-progress (WIP), and profitability analysis utilizing past A&E Industry experience.
  • Ensure proper revenue recognition in compliance with project-based accounting standards.
  • Maintain the integrity of job cost reporting and support project audits or reviews.

 

Compliance & Audit

  • Coordinate annual external audits and liaise with auditors and tax advisors.
  • Oversee adherence to internal control frameworks and ensure timely remediation of audit findings.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations and other financial reporting requirements.
  • Oversee company’s compliance with professional and insurance requirements related to engineering services.
  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and insurance providers on risk management and compliance.
  • Support due diligence, integration, and compliance activities related to mergers, acquisitions, or strategic partnerships.

 

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop an accounting team of professionals across AP, AR, payroll, and project accounting functions fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Foster collaboration between accounting, HR, IT, and operations to align financial processes with company goals.
  • Champion continuous improvement, automation, and AI-driven efficiency within financial operations.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • CPA designation is preferred (or CMA with relevant experience).

 

Experience

  • 7+ years of accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a management or Controller role.
  • Experience in a project-based, professional services, or A&E (Architecture or Engineering) environment is required.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, FAR, project accounting, and financial analysis.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., Deltek Vision/Vantagepoint, or similar ERP systems).
  • Experience leading financial system implementations or upgrades (e.g., Deltek Vision/Vantagepoint, Power BI, or equivalent ERP).
  • Demonstrated success improving financial reporting processes and team performance through digital transformation.

 

Skills

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Proven leadership and team management abilities.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with data visualization and BI reporting tools.
  • AI experience is a plus
