CNC Programmer/ Machinist III

Boston Dynamics is seeking a CNC Programmer / Machinist III to join our growing organization. Every day, you will help to produce machined parts by programming, setting up, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine independently; maintaining quality and safety standards; keeping records; maintaining equipment and supplies. Additionally, you will maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations while keeping your workplace neat, clean and organized. Day to day activities: 

  • Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T); calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry.

  • Checks stock inventory of materials and tools to determine amount available; anticipating needed stock.

  • Program jobs for multi axis milling machines or  multi axis lathes using CAD/CAM software; Adjust machine cutting paths or settings to optimize production while maintaining quality;   Consider tools required to cut particular materials and program machines accordingly; run machine simulation to prove part programs.

  • Sets-up mills or  lathes by installing and adjusting chucks, indicating and aligning vises,  building tool assemblies, loading tools and probe stock to set machine work offset.

  • Verifies set-up by measuring critical dimensions on first-run part and sample workpieces; adhering to international standards.

  • Maintains specifications by observing milling, drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.

  • Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.

  • Maintains continuity by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.

  • Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.

  • Accomplishes organizational goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Required Skills:

  •  Minimum 2 - 4 years’ experience preferred in set-up of CNC lathes or CNC vertical milling machines

  • Experience with reading and editing machine code will be expected.

  • Knowledge in use of precision measuring instruments and the application of such instruments. Instruments should include but not limited to vernier calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gauges, gauge pins and blocks, indicators and thread gauges.

  • Strong understanding in blueprint reading/ geometric tolerance interpretation.

  • Knowledge of tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars, inserts and other accessories used on various machines.

  • Must possess basic math skills to include but not limited to arithmetic, geometry and algebra for the purpose of calculating material fabrication.

  • Must have previous experience with CNC programming 

  • Solidworks, Esprit, Cimatron or Hypermill software experience a plus.
