About Our Job

The Denver Department of Public Safety is recruiting positions for a new Street Engagement Team (SET).  This team will be unarmed civilians that will enforce quality of life ordinances in the City and County of Denver.  The Street Engagement Team will have the authority to issue citations for a wide range of ordinance violations, but not make arrests.  The team will consist of Street Engagement Team Members (4), Street Engagement Team Senior Member (1), and Street Engagement Team Supervisor (1).

The Street Engagement Team Member will enhance public safety through proactive patrols and enforcement of ordinances.  Members will deliver exceptional customer service in their community contacts.  Members will be trained in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques. The Street Engagement Team may work varying shifts, evenings, and weekends.  

The successful candidate will possess exceptional communication and customer service skills.  The ideal candidate will be able to manage stressful situations and have experience in safety, compliance, enforcement, or another related field.  This position will also require a team-oriented individual with a well-balanced, sensible, and adaptable approach to solving problems.

Schedule: 8:00-4:00pm, Monday-Friday with some weekend availability and occasion mandatory overtime.

This position is not remote, nor will it become so.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Patrols an assigned area of the city on foot and/or in a vehicle, serves as a visual deterrent to code violations, and stays alert to dangers such as working in secluded areas and/or dealing with potentially hostile and emotional contacts with the public.

  • Prepares documents and testimony for court or administrative hearings, including incident reports and narratives.

  • Communicates with law enforcement personnel to provide information, request back-up and coordinate assistance related to enforcement issues and public safety emergencies.

  • Enforces parking codes by issuing warnings, notices, and citations for parking violations, explains codes and regulations regarding parking violations to the public, and provides information regarding state and city parking rules and regulations.

  • Operates a two-way radio to report enforcement information, request assistance, or to receive dispatching orders and operates hand-held computers and printers for citation issuance,

  • Interacts with the public to increase awareness of City ordinances.

  • Communicates with diverse and multi-lingual community members, represents the department at various public events.

  • Works collaboratively and cooperatively with teams to accomplish large and small tasks (e.g., agencies, partners, law enforcement, fire/EMS, park rangers)

  • Uses various computer programs to create logs, reports, to track and document field work.

  • Works long arduous days while remaining safe, positive, and focused; works in inclement weather conditions and stands/walks continuously for long periods of time.

  • Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions sufficient to be able to establish a safe environment for self and others.

  • Ability to interacts with customers in a friendly and professional manner, work to resolve issues quickly and effectively, and is knowledgeable about products and services.

  • Skill in applying existing guidelines or recommending new approaches to the development and modification of work plans, methods and procedures for the work unit or function.

  • A strong ability to considers risks, evaluate, and chooses the best alternative in order to make a determination, draw conclusions, or solve a problem.

  • Ability to learn how to and make appropriate use of a two-way radio in accordance with City communication procedures.

  • Ability to learn how to and make appropriate use of pepper spray and other defensive equipment.

  • Ability to learn and maintain CPR and first aid techniques sufficient to be able to perform lifesaving measures and render first aid when needed.

Below are the minimum requirements used to determine eligibility for this position:

  • Education Requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.

  • Experience Requirement: One (1) year experience in public relations, or regulation compliance experience.

  • Education and Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.

  • License/Certification Requirement: Must possess a valid code enforcement commission license within 6 months of hire.

  • Possession of CPR and First Aid/NARCAN certificate within 6 months of hire.

  • Obtain OC spray certification.

  • All other training as assigned.

  • By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
