General Notes
The Media Relations Coordinator in University Marketing and Communications will provide communications services in support of UT's endeavors in public affairs, media relations, content development and distribution, and community relations. This position offers the potential to acquire a broad range of experience in press release and owned content generation, audience development, copyediting, analytics, and media outreach in the fast-paced environment of one of the nation’s leading academic and research institutions.
General Notes: Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for any employer without sponsorship.
Responsibilities
Operations: Manages the process of receiving and distributing university press releases, media advisories, and other news items. Maintains lists of contact information for external media. Manages centralized media contacts database and metrics tracking platform. Uploads news releases and advisories to content management system (CMS). Trains media relations personnel across campus in use of the media contacts database and CMS. Serves as an initial point of contact for Media Relations matters for colleagues across colleges, schools and units.
Media Relations: Acts as first point of contact for news media, including triaging media inquiries by email and phone, ascertaining details about media requests, and directing them to the appropriate contact. Conducts topical research to support senior leadership issue awareness. Coordinates press events including logistics under the guidance of senior leadership.
Media Monitoring and Reporting: Tracks and reports external media metrics for the university. Compiles a news clippings list for distribution to university executives and a round-up of major news coverage of the university, including a monthly media recap. Tracks and creates media metrics reports for major issues and events as assigned. Formats and distributes reports using email templates, group mailing lists, and group email system.
Collaboration: Keeps and distributes notes from weekly media relations team meetings. Maintains media relations calendars.
Writing: May write original news content for the University (explainers, Q&As, roundups, media pitches, etc..) on a wide array of topics as assigned. May proof and copy edit news releases or other documents.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Three years of experience in public affairs, including media relations, journalism, coordination of special events, and preparation of informational materials.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Accuracy in all phases of work.
Ability to interact in a professional manner with faculty, staff, students and the public.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
More than three years of experience in public affairs or related field.
Experience using Wordpress, or similar CMS.
Basic knowledge of HTML.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills.
Intermediate skill level with Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel)
Basic database skills a plus.
Experience using a project management system a plus.
Familiarity with group email systems (Emma, Mailchimp, Constant Contact or similar) a plus.
Salary Range
$60,000 + depending on qualifications
Working Conditions
May work around standard office conditions.
Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
Occasional overtime during peak periods.
This position is based in Austin, TX and is required to work on campus.
