Position Details
Information Technology and Security at The University of Tampa has an opening for a Senior Systems Engineer. Under the direction of the Director of IT Infrastructure, the Senior System Engineer will ensure quality and responsive server systems through ongoing technical design, planning, implementation, preventative maintenance, assessment, proactive monitoring, with the highest level of performance tuning and recovery procedures.
The Senior Systems Engineer will provide technical guidance and support in concert with the direction of Information Technology and Security management and will ensure adherence to best practices. They will implement proven methodologies to promote continuous server system operations, resiliency and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans and documentation of server systems.
This position is designated as an essential employee and may be required to report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather or other conditions.
Responsibilities
Ensure that server systems and applications are available, reliable, and meet the delivery service needs of the University:
• Act as the team lead to ensure proper direction and development of server systems policies, procedures, and architecture.
• Assist with the development and maintenance of disaster recovery, business continuity, and resiliency plans.
• Identify and coordinate installation, upgrades, and ongoing support of the server system environment.
• Respond quickly and appropriately to service desk tickets and keep everyone updated on status.
• Collaboratively review, plan, and implement upgrades of existing applications, ensuring minimal disruption to service delivery.
• Develops new system and application implementation plans, custom scripts, and testing procedures to ensure operational reliability.
• Develops procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use, acts of nature, and user abuse.
• Coordinate and execute upon approved adjustments and changes that increase performance and availability.
• Ensure high availability and acceptable levels of performance of mission critical server systems.
• Provide up-to-date system documentation and inventories.
• Coordinate and update related vendor support contracts for hardware and server system software.
• When necessary, work in concert with software and hardware vendors for problem resolution.
• Ensure integrity and availability of data through continuous assessment of data backup operations.
• Provide advance notification of all planned server systems and network outages within a robust change control environment and set realistic expectations on availability.
• Coordinate and communicate closely with management and service desk during all unplanned outages.
• Collaboratively work with members of Information Technology and Security as necessary to resolve issues or assist with projects as assigned.
• Develops and coordinates project tasks and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize the impact on service availability.
• Stays current with technological developments in server systems technology and recommends ways for the University to take advantage of new technology.
• Confirms system security measures are in place and followed, ensuring the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of the data.
• Support Information Technology and Security in ISO 27001 and ISO 22301 related practices to ensure the security and protection of university assets and data.
• Adhere to policies and procedures as defined by Information Technology and Security management and leadership.
• Maintain a strong collaborative relationship with Information Technology and Security departments, Staff, Faculty, Students, and vendors.
• Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technologies or related field; or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
• Three to five years of experience working as Senior System Administrator.
• Previous higher education experience.
• Microsoft certifications preferred.
• Knowledge of or the ability to learn quickly The University of Tampa software programs such as Workday and Microsoft Office.
• Willingness to embrace new technologies and innovative organizational practices.
Competencies
• Have strong customer service skills. Focused on client’s objectives and attentive to the needs
of users.
• Demonstrated experience with Windows System and advanced knowledge of Active Directory,
Group Policies, Single Sign On, AD Federation, DNS, DHCP
• Strong knowledge of VMware ESX / vSphere.
• Strong knowledge of SAN Storage Configuration and Administration.
• Strong knowledge of PowerShell Scripting.
• Working knowledge of Office365.
• Working knowledge of IaaS, PaaS, and other cloud technologies. • Strong understanding of
technical troubleshooting methodology.
• Ability to facilitate problem-solving among administrative groups with varying needs and
priorities, and to communicate well with administrative users, technical staff, and senior
management.
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills across
organizational boundaries.
• Ability to work with a range of technical staff to develop joint solutions.
