Job Description
Summary
The AeroMechanical Engineering Lead coordinates with other program managers, engineering managers, and functional groups to meet project requirements and milestones. As a member of the Engineering leadership team, the Aeromechanical Engineering Lead participates in executing the overall engineering product development strategy, team development, and evaluation.
Position Responsibilities
- Leads a group of Aeromechanical, Aerospace, Mechanical, and/or Manufacturing Engineers, including staffing, training, performance evaluation and career development; attracts and retains high caliber staff and provides mentorship
- Plans, coordinates, and directs engineering development projects, including product changes and enhancements
- Designs, modifies, develops, and implements aeromechanical/mechanical engineering solutions as an individual contributor and/or team lead
- Performs all aspects of vehicle design from initial concept to complete production-ready design.
- Resolution of design challenges and coordination with multidisciplinary engineering groups.
- Builds and tests prototype systems in order to validate designs
- Conducts informal and formal presentations.
- Works with manufacturing organization for the introduction of new designs
- Frequently interacts with customers and/or functional peer group leaders, and suppliers, normally involving matters between functional areas
- Collaborates with Program Managers to create and periodically review resource plans
- Establishes and assures adherence to budgets, schedules, and work plans
- Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)
- Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Aeromechanical, Mechanical or related Engineering is required or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Minimum 8+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Minimum 2+ years successfully leading a team
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience on multiple engineering projects including research and development efforts.
- Demonstrated competence in Mechanical Engineering processes and design/analysis tools, solving Mechanics & Kinematics problems
- Demonstrated understanding of metallic, plastic and composite material properties
- Demonstrated ability to solve basic structural dynamics problems
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, Excel, Word and PowerPoint is required
- Demonstrated understanding of industry design and documentation standards (GD&T, ASME, Change Control, etc.)
- Experienced with designing: machined parts, composite parts, injection molded parts, sheet metal parts, wire assemblies and mechanical assemblies
- Experienced with: mechanical, lab, field, flight, and environmental testing.
- Demonstrated understanding of engineering configuration management processes.
- Experienced with working from high-level program requirements
- Ability to analyze the assigned project, break down work into functional disciplines and/or subsystems and create design/develop plans
- Ability to obtain at minimum a Secret level DoD security clearance
Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies
- Advanced degree is preferred
- Hands-on experience with metal and composite fabrication and 3D printing is preferred
- Demonstrated familiarity with UAVs and related engineering design processes is preferred
- Knowledge and experience of analytical techniques and tools for FEA, Thermal, Aerodynamics is preferred
- Demonstrates competency in communicating technically and effectively with multiple disciplines
- Skilled at identifying, communicating, and mitigating technical risks and issues
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
- Exercises independent judgment in methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results

The salary range for this role is:
$124,370 - $176,400AeroVironment considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the location, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, education/training, and key skills.
