PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Hiring Range for this position is: $78,112.73 - $97,640.91/Annually

OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT

Under the Direction of the Recreation Manager, the Facility Superintendent manages multiple recreation facilities and programs.  The position is responsible for all instructional fitness activities while ensuring high quality customer safety and service. The Superintendent is responsible for all aspects of assigned program area. The Superintendent is engaged through challenging assignments, opportunities to grow programs according to the needs and desires of the citizens of Aurora. 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides vision, management and leadership for the City of Aurora

  • Responsible for all oversight and management of the Beck, Central, Moorhead, Southeast, Expo, and Meadowood Centers

  • Responsible for all oversight and management of the recreation fitness programming.

  • Member of the division management team that develops and implements long range plans, strategies, policies and procedures for the recreation division

  • Directs and gives guidance with program planning and activities development as well as researching trends in the industry

  • Manages and supervises program and/or facility activities through subordinate staff

  • Sets work priorities and oversees supervisors and program staff, setting policies and procedures that require staff to provide exceptional programs and excellent customer service

  • Leads by example to ensure excellent customer service for visitors to city of Aurora, facilities and program participants by establishing high customer service standards for staff and ensuring a high level of accountability to meet those expectations

  • Is responsible to prepare the program area budget and manage all revenue and expenses closely to ensure a strong financial performance and meet budgeted projections

  • Assess the condition and functionality of facilities and equipment. Make recommendations for expenditures to support programs or improve facilities

  • Manages contracts and professional service agreements for services and program sites

  • Develops proposals and justifications for programs, budgets and grants

  • Promotes outreach to the community to gain insight into citizen expectations, needs and desires and challenges staff to develop plans to meet them

  • Conducts needs assessment and evaluates program effectiveness

  • Makes personnel decisions on selection, hiring, training, evaluating and developing assigned employees

  • Conducts performance evaluations, establishes goals, objectives and program standards and discipline/termination procedures as necessary

  • Responsible to maintain positive working relationships with elected officials, city staff, school district staff, tournament directors, and independent youth sport organization leaders

  • Manages all intergovernmental agreements related to assigned program area including facility use agreements

  • Assumes division-wide responsibilities as delegated for division projects and /or programs

  • Develops and maintains records, prepares administrative reports

  • Coordinates and administers grant implementation, fiscal management and evaluation of budgets

  • Works with Marketing/Graphics staff to develop attractive marketing and promotional efforts to drive customers to the website and programs

  • Website content contributor. Updates city website content regularly

  • Presents to community groups and guest speakers

  • May serve as liaison to boards. Provides reports to committees, boards and City Council

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration, Business Management or a related field

Experience: 

  • At least 5 years progressively responsible experience in either Park and Recreation Management, Business Management, or a related field, including at least 5 years of supervisory experience

  • At least 4 years of supervisory and budget experience.

  • Experience in grant writing preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Park and Recreation Professional- CPRP

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of how to successfully manage a business with both revenue and expense expectations

Skills: 

  • Strong organization, communication, planning, interpersonal and managerial skills

  • Skill in the use of windows-based programs: Word, Excel and Power Point

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Skill in customer relations, crisis communications management, public speaking and media relations

  • Skill in checking information for accuracy and completeness and correcting errors

Abilities: 

  • Ability to plan, assign, coordinate, direct, and evaluate the work of subordinates

  • Direct and effectively supervise a diverse workforce

  • Motivate staff, create a positive work environment, and hold staff accountable for achieving measurable goals and developing their skills

  • Shifts for this position require availability to work weekdays, evenings, weekends and holidays as needed

Licenses and Certifications Required: 

  • Certified Park and Recreation Professional- CPRP (preferred)

  • First Aid and CPR/AED within the first 6 months of hire

  • Colorado Driver’s License with a good driving record

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Generally light work that requires moving no more than 20 pounds at a time, but infrequently medium work is required that involves moving no more than 50 pounds with or without assistance

  • May require lifting, carrying, walking and standing

  • May require frequent pushing, pulling, bending and stooping

  • Clear vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents

  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens

  • Hand/eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard, carts and moveable shelving

Work Environment:

  • Works both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise and dust.

Equipment Used:

  • Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel, WebEx and menu driven databases as a part of the Library automated systems

  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, laptop, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
