The Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Clinical Coder to join our Health Information Services (HIS) team at Macquarie University Health. Reporting to the Manager, Health Information Services, you will play a key role in ensuring the accurate and timely classification of inpatient episodes across Macquarie University Hospital and Clinics.

In this position, you will apply your extensive knowledge of ICD-10-AM, ACHI and ACS to code separations using 3M Codefinder and associated electronic coding resources. Your work is essential to maintaining high-quality clinical data, supporting casemix reporting, and strengthening MQ Health’s clinical, financial, and research outcomes.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to ongoing coding quality improvement activities, collaborate closely with clinicians and health information professionals, and support evidence-based decision-making across MQ Health. You will also have the chance to contribute to quality projects, participate in audit activities, and support continuous process improvements.

Key accountabilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Accurately classify (code) diseases and procedures for inpatient episodes using 3M Codefinder, ICD-10-AM coding books/eBooks, and other resources in accordance with National Coding Standards.

  • Liaise with internal and external clinical coders regarding coding queries and coordinate follow-up with clinicians as required.

  • Monitor and evaluate coding statistics to ensure key performance indicators and timelines are consistently met.

  • Assist with clinical documentation improvement by identifying documentation gaps and supporting clinician education where needed.

  • Participate in coding quality improvement activities, including coding audits, and report findings to the Manager or Senior Clinical Coder.

  • Contribute to quality projects and continuous workflow improvements within the Health Information Services department.

  • Ensure strict confidentiality and compliance with hospital policies, statutory regulations, and privacy requirements.

  • Support departmental responsibilities where required, including reporting, clerical tasks and medico-legal functions.

  • Develop strong working relationships with clinicians, health information managers and staff to enhance understanding of clinical documentation and data collection processes.

You are an experienced clinical coder in a hospital healthcare setting (private hospital experience desired) with strong technical knowledge, exceptional attention to detail, and a commitment to high-quality clinical documentation and data integrity. You are confident working independently and collaboratively, and you bring strong communication, analytical, and organisational skills.

Selection Criteria

  • Recognised Clinical Coding qualification or degree in Health Information Management / Medical Record Administration

  • Minimum 2+ years tertiary hospital clinical coding experience

  • Knowledge and experience in a private hospital healthcare setting is highly desirable

  • Extensive knowledge and application of ICD-10-AM, ACHI, ACS and casemix/DRG grouping

  • Demonstrated coding accuracy and knowledge of clinical documentation standards

  • Experience with computerised clinical information systems and 3M Codefinder

  • Strong organisational, communication and interpersonal skills

  • High attention to detail, accountability, and reliability

  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively within a team
