Northrop Grumman Space Systems, Multi-Domain Operations, Missile Defense Integration Business Unit (BU) has an exciting career opportunity for a Chief Systems Engineer supporting an Internal Research and Development (IRAD) project to join our team of qualified, diverse, and innovative individuals located in Huntsville, AL.  Some travel (10-25%) will be required for cross-site coordination.

The Chief Engineer position requires an exceptional degree of ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness to lead the system definition, technical planning, and execution on a large, software-centric effort involving several different parts of the company.  The Chief Engineer will be responsible to lead, uncover, and resolve issues associated with the design, development, and implementation of the system. This individual will also work with the customer and Business Unit leadership to understand and meet evolving customer needs.

Duties/Responsibilities:

The Chief Engineer will be the definitive technical authority for all aspects of engineering for the entire project and responsible for driving the system architecture in coordination with the Chief Architect.

  • Develops and maintains a strong PMO and customer relationship to ensure that all stakeholder needs, goals, and objectives are considered.
  • Leads a multi-disciplined engineering team and manages the technical performance of the program including cost and schedule requirements for both internal work and subcontracted elements.
  • Coordinates system level requirements development, software design, verification and validation activities.
  • Oversees major engineering reviews and readiness as well as configuration control boards.
  • In coordination with the Systems Engineering Lead, ensures that the program is adhering to sound engineering processes in the development, production, test, and sustainment of products for our customers and is compliance with company policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Maintains cognizance over technical activities within the teams and in coordination with the Systems Engineering Lead and Software Lead, ensures horizontal integration of the best engineering practices.
  • Continually coordinates with the Systems Engineering Lead and Software Lead to ensure the execution of program statement of work, consistent technical baselines and serves as the technical point of contact with the customer.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline AND 20 years of related professional/military experience, OR a Master of Science degree in a STEM discipline AND 18 years of related professional/military experience, OR a STEM Ph.D. AND 16 year of related professional/military experience.
  • Systems engineering experience, to include architectural studies, technical baseline definition, requirements & interface management, hardware/software integration, and test planning & execution
  • Must have familiarity with network, commercial cloud, and platform infrastructures 
  • Must have familiarity with the software development lifecycle
  • Must have experience with software development or experience leading a software development effort
  • Must have familiarity with containerized software architecture
  • Must have experience modeling in a software product line engineering (PLE) environment 
  • Must have experience with Systems engineering tools (i.e. Cameo Suite) and Agile framework
  • Experience leading a team of engineers
  • Your ability to transfer and maintain the final adjudicated government Secret clearance (DoD must be in-scope or enrolled in Continuous Evaluation), and any program access(es) required for the position within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience leading a large, collaborative, multi-disciplinary, cross-site team
  • Prior experience with space systems mission architecture design, development, and implementation, including identification and definition of key system internal and external interfaces
  • Knowledge and experience with the definition of MOSA – Modular Open Systems Approach, and interfaces definition, development, and control
  • Experience in integrating complex system across multiple domains
  • Experience demonstrating concepts to management and customers 
  • Experience with C++ software design and implementation

Primary Level Salary Range: $197,500.00 - $296,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
