The Chief of Staff to the CTO is a high-impact, strategic partner who acts as a force multiplier for the Chief Technology Officer and the entire technology organization. This is not an administrative role; you are a key member of the technology leadership team responsible for driving strategic initiatives, ensuring operational excellence, and facilitating effective communication and execution across all engineering and product development functions. You will operate as a trusted advisor to the CTO, enabling them to focus on the most critical technological and strategic challenges facing the company.

The impact you will create:

Strategic planning and execution

  • Strategic alignment: Partner with the CTO to define, articulate, and execute the company's technology vision and strategy. Translate high-level strategy into actionable, cross-functional plans and initiatives.
  • Goal management: Drive the technology organization's goal-setting process (e.g., OKRs, KPIs), ensuring alignment with overall company objectives. Track progress against goals and lead reporting efforts for the executive team and board.
  • Initiative leadership: Spearhead special projects and high-priority strategic initiatives on behalf of the CTO, from initial scoping and analysis through to execution and delivery. This could include M&A due diligence, technology assessments, or organizational restructuring.

Operational Excellence

  • Rhythm of the business: Establish and manage the operating cadence for the technology leadership team. This includes planning and facilitating leadership offsites, weekly staff meetings, all-hands meetings, and business reviews. You will own the agendas, ensure pre-work is complete, and drive follow-up on action items.
  • Financial and headcount management: Oversee the technology department's annual budget, headcount planning, and resource allocation in partnership with Finance and HR. Provide analysis and recommendations to ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Process optimization: Identify and address bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and communication gaps within the technology organization. Implement scalable processes and systems to improve velocity, quality, and collaboration.
  • Change management
  • Accountability
  • Trial by fire

Communication and stakeholder management

  • CTO Proxy: Act as a reliable proxy for the CTO in key meetings and discussions, representing their viewpoint and making informed decisions when appropriate.
  • Content creation: Prepare high-quality communications and presentations for various audiences, including the executive team, board of directors, all-hands meetings, and external-facing events. Synthesize complex technical and business information into clear, concise narratives.
  • Cross-functional liaison: Build and maintain strong relationships with key leaders across the organization (e.g., Product, Sales, Marketing, Finance) to ensure seamless collaboration and alignment on strategic priorities.

What you bring in:

  • Experience: A minimum of 8-10 years of experience in a technology-focused environment, with a proven track record in roles such as management consulting, strategic planning, business operations, or technical program management.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Business acumen: Strong understanding of business fundamentals, including budget management, financial analysis, and strategic planning. You must be able to connect technology initiatives directly to business outcomes.
  • Technical fluency: While not a hands-on coding role, you must be conversant in modern software development methodologies (e.g., Agile, DevOps), cloud infrastructure, and the key components of a modern technology stack.
  • Previous experience: As a Chief of Staff, a similar strategic operations role, or an MBA or other advanced degree is a significant plus.
  • Exceptional communicator: Outstanding written, verbal, and presentation skills. You can command a room of executives as effectively as you can communicate with a team of engineers.
  • Strategic thinker: Ability to see the bigger picture and connect the dots between disparate initiatives, while also being able to dive into the details.
  • High emotional intelligence: Natural ability to build trust and influence stakeholders at all levels without direct authority. You are empathetic, discreet, and possess sound judgment.
  • Problem solver: You are an analytical, data-driven individual who can structure and solve ambiguous, complex problems with minimal guidance.
  • Unflappable and adaptable: You thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and can gracefully manage competing priorities and shifting deadlines. You maintain a positive, can-do attitude under pressure.
