TRIUMF’s student program typically hires ~40 students each term from across all disciplines who hang together socially and professionally during the term, and beyond. Our program offers young minds a chance to gather, learn, make new friends, and have fun doing so during their time at TRIUMF. We hold weekly ProD sessions for students which include different activities such as conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and active listening. Additionally, we hold weekly seminars about the different experiments at TRIUMF, and these talks specifically cater to students. Located on the UBC campus makes it easier for students to make friends, create memories, and explore Vancouver all while working at TRIUMF.
TRIUMF’s student program is more than just a place to work, its learning, memories, friendships, exploration, and development all clubbed into one.
Come join us to see how we are working to unlock the mysteries of the universe and shape the future. Apply now and be part of our extraordinary journey.

TRIUMF’s Life Sciences Division is seeking an undergraduate chemistry student to contribute to pioneering research in radiopharmaceuticals for cancer imaging and therapy as part of a collaborative project with the University of Alberta. The student will join the synthetic effort to develop a novel radiotracer aimed at targeting a broad spectrum of cancers, including late-stage metastatic types, using advanced radioisotopes with strong clinical potential. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to work within one of the world’s leading radiopharmaceutical research environments, surrounded by experts in nuclear medicine and radiochemistry. Through this high-impact research, the student will gain hands-on experience in radiotracer development for emerging therapeutic targets with the potential to transform cancer treatment worldwide.
The successful candidate will focus on the radiolabeling and/or chemical synthesis of radiotracer precursors, applying an exploratory approach to optimize radiolabeling conditions using F-18. This process aims to refine and optimize radiotracer components, which will subsequently be evaluated in preclinical radiopharmaceutical studies. Under the direct supervision of TRIUMF scientists, the student will engage in radiolabeling and purifying radiotracers, planning and executing experiments, and analyzing data to inform further development. This hands-on experience will provide the candidate with invaluable insight into the practical and scientific aspects of radiotracer development within a premier research setting.
Key Responsibilities
Synthesize key intermediates to develop a targeted radiotracer for cancer imaging and therapy.
Plan, execute, and refine radiolabeling routes for radiotracer components under the guidance of TRIUMF scientists.
Perform radiosynthesis, purification, and product characterization, while documenting findings in detailed reports.
Present findings in both internal and external presentations to communicate progress and results.
Qualifications
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate chemistry program or related field.
Foundational knowledge in organic synthesis, purification, and characterization.
Strong analytical skills and experience with data collection, documentation, and report writing.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team and under the supervision of senior scientists.
Demonstrated passion for scientific inquiry, innovation, and solving complex challenges.
Skills to be gained
Technical Skills Development: Gain proficiency in radiosynthesis with [18F]fluoride, purification techniques, and characterization methods specific to radiopharmaceutical research.
Understanding of Medicinal Chemistry Principles: Apply and deepen knowledge of medicinal chemistry concepts, specifically SAR, for developing targeted radiotracers.
Data Analysis and Interpretation: Learn to analyze experimental data critically and adjust synthesis protocols accordingly, fostering strong problem-solving abilities.
Communication and Presentation Skills: Strengthen both oral and written communication through report writing and formal presentations, preparing the student for professional scientific discourse.
Insight into Nuclear Medicine and Radiochemistry: Gain exposure to innovative radiopharmaceutical approaches and the impact of targeted radionuclide therapy on cancer treatment advancements.
Nuclear Energy Worker
The incumbent will be required to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.
