About the Role
The Certified Surgical Assistant plays an essential role as part of the surgical team, anticipating the needs of the surgeon and ensuring the highest level of intraoperative efficiency and patient safety. This role requires a strong foundation in surgical principles, excellent technical skills, and the ability to communicate effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
The Surgical Assistant supports the surgeon during procedures by performing advanced technical tasks, assisting with exposure and closure, and ensuring that each operation runs smoothly from start to finish.
Key Responsibilities
Assist the surgeon with tasks such as selecting and preparing equipment, positioning patients, and setting up operative tables
Provide retraction for optimal visualization of the surgical site and cauterize bleeding vessels as directed
Suture and close incisions, apply dressings, splints, and casts, and instill medications as needed
Perform preoperative and postoperative duties to ensure seamless patient care and readiness for procedures
Maintain sterile technique and uphold infection control and patient safety standards
Communicate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and the broader care team to promote positive outcomes
Contribute to the efficiency and organization of the operating room environment
Qualifications
Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Assistant Program – Required
Current Surgical Assistant License in the state of Virginia – Required
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire
Strong knowledge of surgical instruments, anatomy, and sterile techniques
Ability to function effectively in a team-based, high-acuity surgical setting
