7560 Noninvasive Cardiology

The Cardiac Sonographer I performs complete non-invasive transthoracic echocardiographic studies, including two-dimensional, M-Mode and Doppler and/or demonstrates competency in vascular ultrasound. The Cardiac Sonographer I provides applicable data regarding cardiovascular anatomy and hemodynamics in order to assist the physician in the diagnosis of cardiac or vascular abnormalities.

QUALIFICATIONS

License /Certification
Required:

BLS

Must be ARDMS or CCI eligible.


Education
Required: Successful completion from a formal sonography program (minimum 18-month program); OR is eligible for employment before completing the formal sonography program, subject to approval from the program.



Experience
Preferred: Clinical experience gained during a formal cardiac or vascular educational program.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Working towards proficiency in all cardiac and vascular ultrasound modalities (except pediatric echocardiography):

Adult Echocardiography

Assist the Cardiologist with Transesophageal echo (inpatient)

Stress echocardiograms

Treadmill stress test (Adults & Pediatrics)

Dobutamine stress echocardiograms

Tilt table test

Carotid duplex ultrasound

Lower extremity venous duplex

Lower extremity arterial duplex

Upper extremity venous duplex

Upper extremity arterial duplex

Venous duplex reflux studies

Saphenous vein mapping

Upper extremity vein mapping

Radial artery mapping

Abdominal Aorta (AAA screening, OP only)

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential

Operates all equipment to perform adult echocardiography and vascular ultrasound examinations.  Uses correct parameters based on patient age and diagnosis.  This includes, but is not limited to 2D, Doppler and color Doppler.

Performs cardiovascular ultrasound procedures and consistently shows an understanding and demonstration of proper techniques and documentation. This includes, selecting correct images for acquisition and sends to appropriate PACS system.

Obtains and records all pertinent clinical information prior to exam. Always ensures that an adequate clinical history is available to correlate with the ultrasound exam being performed. Regularly consults with others as necessary to obtain a complete clinical history.

Correctly, identity’s patient using two patient identifiers and selects the correct imaging study from the modality work list or enters it manually if work list is unavailable. Following the imaging protocol/procedure, verifies accurate transfer of images into PACS prior to “completing” exam in Health Information System.

Generates preliminary reports for echocardiography and/or vascular ultrasound. Ensures that all calculations and measurements are entered and completed prior to physician review.

Communicates efficiently and effectively with ordering and/or interpreting physician prior to exams on inpatient studies and as needed for outpatient studies. This includes preliminary sonographer's observation of significant pathology are called to interpreting physician.

Attends departmental staff and technologist meetings routinely.

Develops and maintains good working relationships with all members of the hospital, medical staff, and community.

Assists other members of the shift with patient assignments.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area. Knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age specific needs. Able to effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care.

Pay Range

$40.48 -$60.72
