Business Manager - Engineering

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Business Manager to join our dynamic Worldwide Engineering team. Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President (EVP) of Engineering, you will play a critical role in optimizing our engineering team's operational strategy, driving strategic initiatives, and ensuring the efficient execution of our technical roadmap. This is an exciting opportunity for a business systems thinking-minded individual with a basic understanding of engineering principles and methodologies. 


Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning & Execution: Collaborate with the EVP of Engineering and other engineering leaders to develop and execute strategic plans, OKRs, and roadmaps. Monitor progress against goals and identify areas for improvement.
  • Operational Excellence: Oversee and improve business processes, workflows, and tools to enhance efficiency, productivity, and quality. 
  • Rhythm of Business Management: Establish and manage the engineering organization's rhythm of business, including recurring meetings, reviews, and reporting cycles to ensure alignment and accountability.
  • Budget Planning & Forecasting: Partner with finance to lead the annual and quarterly budget planning cycles for the engineering department, working with finance and engineering leadership to develop accurate forecasts and allocate resources effectively.
  • Program & Project Management: Drive key engineering team programs and projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget. Facilitate cross-functional collaboration and communication.
  • Cross-functional partnership: Work closely with finance, HR, and talent acquisition on headcount management and planning, and roll out of programmatic efforts.
  • Resource Management: Work closely with engineering managers on workforce planning, capacity management, and resource allocation to align with strategic priorities.
  • Reporting: Prepare and present reports on engineering performance, progress, and key metrics to the EVP and other stakeholders. 
  • Team Development: Contribute to the development and growth of the engineering team by identifying training needs, facilitating knowledge sharing, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Special Projects: Lead and support various ad-hoc projects and initiatives as directed by the EVP of Engineering.
  • All-Hands & Internal Communications Planning: Plan and execute engineering all-hands meetings, town halls, and other internal communication events to foster transparency, engagement, and a shared understanding of strategic priorities


You’d be a good fit: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field. 
  • 10+ years of experience in business operations, program management, or a similar role within a fast-paced technology or engineering organization.
  • Demonstrated experience reporting into a senior-level engineering leader (e.g., VP or SVP of Engineering).
  • Strong understanding of software or hardware development lifecycles, agile methodologies, and engineering best practices.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, analyze financial data, and make data-driven decisions.
  • Excellent project and program management skills with a track record of successfully delivering complex initiatives.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of the organization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with an exceptional attention to detail
  • Proficiency in project management tools (e.g., Jira, Asana) and business intelligence platforms.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.


You’d be a great fit: 

  • MBA or advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience with a specific industry or product domain relevant to our company.
  • Familiarity with various cloud platforms and technologies.
  • Certifications in project management (e.g., PMP) or agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum Master).

 

Location: This position can work onsite or hybrid from one of our offices (College Park, MD, Bothell, WA) or fully remote in the US.

The approximate base salary range for this position is $147,336 - $192,901. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, and equity.

Compensation will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. Beyond base salary, total compensation includes a variable bonus and equity component and a range of benefit options found on our career site at ionq.co/jobs.  Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided when a candidate receives an offer of employment. IonQ's HQ is located in College Park, Maryland, just outside of Washington DC. We are actively building out our recently opened manufacturing and production facility in Bothell, WA (near Seattle). Depending on the position, you may be required to be near one of our offices in College Park, Seattle, Toronto, Canada, and Basel, Switzerland.
