About the Role:

The Biotechnology Laboratory Technician supports the teaching and research activities of the community college’s biotechnology program by maintaining laboratory operations, preparing instructional materials, and assisting faculty and students during laboratory sessions. The technician ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality lab experiences that align with current industry and educational standards.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and set up laboratory experiments, reagents, media, and equipment for biotechnology courses (e.g., cell culture, microbiology, molecular biology).
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory instruments such as autoclaves, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, PCR machines, and balances.
  • Manage laboratory inventory, order supplies, and maintain accurate records of chemicals, biological materials, and equipment usage.
  • Oversee safe handling, labeling, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with OSHA, EPA, and institutional safety regulations.
  • Assist faculty with demonstrations and provide technical support during lab classes.
  • Train and supervise student assistants or interns in laboratory procedures and safety.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and readiness of laboratory spaces.
  • Support curriculum development by testing new experiments and procedures, as directed by faculty.
  • Ensure proper documentation and quality control of laboratory procedures.
  • Assist teachers and students in the use of a variety of equipment, materials, and supplies in laboratory instructional settings.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate degree (completed or in progress) in Biotechnology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related life science field; equivalent coursework or laboratory experience may be considered.
  • Experience with common biotechnology laboratory techniques such as pipetting, DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, PCR, and aseptic technique.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and hazardous waste handling.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology or related field.
  • Prior experience working in an academic or industrial biotechnology lab.
  • Familiarity with equipment maintenance, calibration, and recordkeeping.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty and students.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily laboratory-based with exposure to biological materials, chemicals, and equipment.
  • May require occasional evening or weekend hours to support lab schedules or special events.
  • Must adhere to all institutional safety and compliance protocols.
