Job Summary: FLETC's mission is to train and support the training of federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement officers and international partners that are responsible for enforcing laws, treaties, and regulations within the United States and abroad.

Major Duties:

  • Serving as a Automotive Worker WG-5823-8 makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) team and mission. This position is located in the Mobile Assets Branch within Training Support Division under the Mission and Readiness Support Directorate. The primary purpose of this position is providing fleet management and automotive repair support to a large motor vehicle fleet consisting of a wide variety of organization-owned and government-leased vehicles and equipment. These assets are used to train students in a wide variety of driving techniques such as high-speed pursuit, skids, anti-terrorist evasion techniques, surveillance, investigations, marine operations, etc. Typical duties include: Responsible for making repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, adjusting, or cleaning defective parts or components. Replacing sensors, water pumps, spark plugs, brake shoes, mufflers, radiator caps, condensers, engine gaskets, a variety of belts and hoses, and complete assemblies such as removing old engines and replacing them with new engines. Adjusting brake pads, transmission linkages, engine idle, voltage and current control valves sensing valves, expansion valves, and pressure regulator valves. Cleaning or replacing filters, screens, battery cables and clamps, engine components, and heating and cooling devices; servicing and checking air conditioning systems, including purging and recharging systems; flushing radiators and replacing antifreeze solutions; and aligning front ends of cars and trucks by adjusting caster and camber, and setting toe-in. The applicant must have experience which requires: Ability to Do the Work of The Position with Normal Supervision: The applicant must have experience performing such duties as diagnosing, removing, replacing, cleaning, and installing a wide variety of parts, components, and accessories, perform safety inspections on multiple lines of vehicles i.e. (Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet and various other types of motorized assets) to ensure vehicles are safe to operate, be familiar with automotive diagnostics tools to include, equipment designed to troubleshoot specific automotive systems and computer programs designed to monitor and diagnose electrical sensors and controls along with performing preventative maintenance such as changing oil, filter, air filter, fuel filter, differential and transfer case fluid change, greasing chassis and drive line and topping of all fluids. Physical Requirements: Positions make repairs which often requires working in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. Position frequently stands for long periods of time, bend, stoop, crawl under vehicles, and make repairs in other tight spaces. Frequently lifts, handles, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 40 lbs. Work Environment: Servicing of equipment may be performed in shop or on-site. Most work is done inside where it is drafty and noisy, and fumes from vehicles are usually present. Frequently stands on hard surfaces for long periods of time. Crawls under vehicles and makes repairs while on hard, usually damp surfaces. Occasionally performs repairs outside, sometimes in bad weather. Dirt, dust, and grease are always present. Vehicle fluids, such as battery acids and hydraulic fluids, may cause burns or irritate the skin. Frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and strains.
