Job Summary: Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, San Diego Sector, Mission Readiness Operations Division, Fleet Management, located in Boulevard, CA.

Major Duties:

  • This position will allow you to use your knowledge and expertise with the maintenance and repair of government-owned vehicles and equipment. This position starts at an hourly rate of $34.70 (WL-10, Step 1) to $40.50 (WL-10, Step 5). As an Automotive Mechanic Leader, you will serve under the direct technical and administrative supervision of the Automotive Mechanic Supervisor. You will assist with overseeing the sector's automotive and administrative functions. Typical work assignments will include: Obtaining materials or information from supervisors to relay to subordinate employees. Resolving minor complaints or referring those of a more serious nature to higher authority. Recording itemization of parts, materials, and time expended on vehicles or other equipment serviced or repaired. Leading three or more employees in the sector automotive maintenance and repair program and providing on the job training for subordinate employees.

Qualifications: Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. To minimally qualify for the WL-10 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Element(s): Ability to lead or supervise. To meet the Screen Out Element(s), you should have experience performing the following duties: Leading employees in the sector automotive maintenance and repair program and, in the absence of the Automotive Mechanic Supervisor, assuming responsibility, including the full range of operational and administrative functions. Planning, scheduling, directing and supervising the work performed by Automotive and Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanics, Workers, and Helpers WG-5 through WG-10, Tools and Parts Attendants, Transportation Assistants, and Student Aides. Assisting the Supervisor in planning work programs, determining priority assignments, scheduling, parts ordering and purchasing, bulk gasoline and oil ordering, and other operational and administrative functions. Using various types of hand and power tools, testers and gauges, e.g., test stands, oscilloscopes, engine and analyzer scopes, compression gauges, special feeler and dial gauges, exhaust analyzers, and engine and chassis dynamometers. Evaluating future needs and repairs and keeping the supervisors advised concerning jobs in progress, priorities, condition of equipment and personnel needs. Failure to meet these Screen Out Element(s) will result in an ineligible rating. In addition to the experience described above, you will also be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas: Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (including blueprint reading). Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair, etc. Knowledge of technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic). You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 11/13/2025.
