Job Description:

Are you ready to help modernize and optimize automation systems across the National Airspace System (NAS)? Parsons is seeking a talented MBSE Engineer to support the FAA in modeling, simulating, and analyzing automation systems that enable safe and efficient airspace operations. In this role, you will use Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to define architectures, interfaces, and requirements for NAS automation systems, including En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM), Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS), Traffic Flow Management System (TFMS), and Advanced Technologies and Oceanic Procedures (ATOP).

This position interfaces closely with FAA stakeholders to ensure the reliability and scalability of telecommunication systems critical to airspace operations. If you’re passionate about MBSE, telecommunication systems, and delivering high-quality solutions for aviation safety, we want to hear from you!

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Automation System Modeling - Build high-fidelity SysML/UAF models of NAS automation systems, including ERAM, STARS, TFMS, and ATOP. Model system behaviors, including activity flows, decision logic, state transitions, and operational scenarios. Define system interfaces and data exchange protocols to ensure seamless integration with NAS systems such as surveillance, communication, and facilities.

  • Requirements & Architecture Development - Decompose operational requirements into system-level architectures and functional models. Develop Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and define message sets, data schemas, and performance budgets for automation systems. Ensure traceability of requirements to verification evidence, hazards, and certification artifacts.

  • Simulation & Analysis - Execute MBSE-driven trade studies focused on automation system performance, scalability, reliability, and cybersecurity constraints. Design experiments and scenarios to test automation system behaviors under stress, fault conditions, and operational variability. Calibrate models to lab data from FAA facilities and prototype modernization paths for automation systems.

  • Digital Thread Integration - Trace the digital thread by linking models to requirements (DOORS/Jama), test cases, risks, hazards, and verification evidence; implement OSLC/DataHub integrations. Collaborate with FAA stakeholders to ensure bidirectional traceability and alignment with FAA Systems Engineering practices.

  • Verification & Validation –  Define verification strategies and generate model-based test viewpoints; support requirement verification and validation planning for automation systems. Produce engineering artifacts consistent with RTCA DO 278A standards for ground-based CNS/ATM software.

  • Document Automation -  Generate specifications, SEMP inputs, ADD/AV/OV/SV/UAF views, and ICDs directly from the model using report generators.

Required Skills/Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Systems, Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline); Master’s Degree preferred.

  • 10+ years overall experience. 5+ years of experience in telecommunication/network modeling for mission-critical systems

  • 3+ years of hands-on MBSE/SysML modeling experience using tools such as Cameo, Rhapsody, Enterprise Architect, or Capella.

  • US Persons required

  • Hands-on experience with discrete event and network simulation tools (e.g., ns-3, OMNeT++, Riverbed/OPNET Modeler, AnyLogic/Arena).

  • Proven delivery of model-based outputs for gated reviews (SRR → CDR) and baseline control/change management.

  • Domain experience in FAA/NAS, NextGen, ATO/AVS programs, or CNS/ATM ground systems.

  • Familiarity with FAA Systems Engineering Manual (SEM), AMS phases (Concept & Requirements, Investment Analysis, Solution Implementation, In-Service Management), and typical JRC evidence.

  • Experience with UAF/DoDAF viewpoints and enterprise modeling; exposure to NAS Enterprise Architecture concepts.

  • Safety/certification context: DO 278A (ground CNS/ATM), awareness of DO 178C/DO 254 (as applicable), and ARP4754A/ARP4761 methods.

  • Toolchain depth: Cameo Systems Modeler (Teamwork Cloud, DataHub, Simulation Toolkit, Report Wizard), Cameo Collaborator, MagicGrid or similar MBSE methods.

  • Model-based testing, simulation, and performance modeling (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink linkage, discrete event or parametric analyses).

Desired Certifications:

  • INCOSE CSEP/ESEP, OMG certifications (OCUP/OCSMP), or PMI/SAFe credentials.
