Purpose of the job

To sustain our pipeline, Lilly is expanding efforts to access a constant stream of external innovation, which will fuel its premier discovery and development engines.

Lilly Ventures (LV) is a pan-therapeutic, global organization. Our goal is to provide scientific expertise, identify breakthrough innovation, and deliver groundbreaking technologies, platforms, and assets into Lilly Research Labs (LRL). The LV team sits at the intersection of Lilly’s industry leading venture capital strategy and the highly innovative global healthcare and life science ecosystems.

The successful applicant is expected to:

  • Execute core operational tasks to a high standard and in a timely manner to accelerate the progression of deals.
  • Support the identification, evaluation and tracking of opportunities of interest, and maintain accurate records of activity.
  • Run, optimize, and create processes and resources to drive rapid and effective team performance.
  • Reinforce the development and maintenance of an extensive network with healthcare innovators (e.g. academia, biotech, incubators, venture capital, peer pharma, regional organisations), through mapping, analysis, triage, tracking, landscaping and strategy-building activities.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a strong communication network within the global LV group and across other Therapeutic Areas (TAs) and functional groups within Lilly, as well as broader Corporate Business Development (CBD).

The responsibilities of this role include: 

The successful applicant is expected to provide operational support to facilitate the execution of the Lilly Ventures strategy by supporting team members (based in Indianapolis, Boston, San Francisco, and the United Kingdom) as directed.

The key activities of the role will be:

  • Execute core operational tasks to a high standard and in a timely manner:
    • Record and maintain relevant information detailing new scientific innovations into internal caseload management information systems
    • Assist team members with basic legal requests (e.g. non-disclosure agreements, material transfer agreements, fee-for-service agreements)
  • Support the identification, evaluation and tracking of new opportunities:
    • Utilize internal databases to provide clear reports and information, updated on a regular basis, to monitor activity, support innovation sourcing partnerships, progress against objectives and drive decisions on new scientific areas and strategies
    • Provide the foundations for strategic scientific, geographic and financial evaluation projects through information-gathering, analysis, scientific review, and triage efforts
  • Run, optimize, and create processes and resources
    • Develop and maintain efficient tracking tools both to improve team efficiency and to support a range of bespoke strategic projects
    • Create and improve upon internal processes to build LV team efficiency, transparency, and communication (e.g. through design and maintenance of SharePoint and MS Teams sites, template creation, etc)
    • Prepare, lead and/or record the conclusions of relevant internal team meetings
    • Foster strong foundations for the continuing expansion of the LV team, via creation and optimization of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
    • Contribute ideas for new processes and resources which improve the speed and effectiveness of the team without adding additional work and responsibilities for its members

  • Contribute to the maintenance of strong internal and external networks:
    • Work with stakeholders across broader Lilly Ventures, TAs, functional areas, Lilly Research Labs, Legal, Operations, and Corporate Business Development as necessary to support the identification and progress of deals
    • Promote transparency through regular contact time and information sharing with individual global LV team members
    • Support global team members in identifying and developing contacts and relationships with new potential external partners
    • Support Lilly’s visibility and brand through preparation for and occasional participation in regional conferences and partnering meetings

Basic Requirements

  • Basic industry-relevant scientific knowledge; should have at least a B.Sc in a scientific discipline related to the pharmaceutical industry (Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, etc)
  • Excellent project management and organisational skills
  • Database and computer skills; talent for analysing and visualising complex data

Additional Skills / Preferences

  • Basic knowledge of pharmaceutical business and drug development process
  • An awareness of industry trends and new areas of scientific development 
  • Basic programming skills for business-relevant (Microsoft) applications
  • Experience/proficiency with SharePoint and MS Teams
  • Highly skilled at gathering and clearly summarizing complex information
  • Proactive problem solver; able to shape and execute workstreams independently
  • Ability to multitask efficiently, prioritize quickly, and manage time effectively
  • Detail-orientated
  • Superior communication skills (written and oral)
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Evidence of the strong interpersonal skills required to coordinate with Lilly team members, primarily remotely (email, video call, phone, IM, etc), and occasionally face-to-face
  • This is a Boston-based position, remote not considered

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$69,000 - $165,000

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
