Position description

The McGill University Department of Pathology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical) based at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). This will be a Contract Academic Staff Position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The McGill University Department of Pathology is committed to offering high-calibre medical education and research training in a wide variety of areas such as carcinogenesis, mechanisms of respiratory diseases, molecular pathology and immunology, neoplasia and cell biology, cell differentiation, biomedical image processing, neurodegenerative disorders, and ophthalmic pathology.

Departmental members are engaged in research that expands our basic understanding of human health and disease and its treatment in order to model optimal pathology practice to provide timely, highest quality, and up-to-date evidence-based diagnostic consultation services that integrate histologic and molecular characterization of disease to our patient population.

The successful candidate will join an academic and high-volume comprehensive division at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), Glen Site—a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. The Glen Pathology lab processes over 75,000 surgical and 60,000 cytology specimens annually. The Pathology division offers residency rotations in subspecialty areas in Anatomic Pathology and Molecular Pathology and has an ongoing hematopathology fellowship program.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be actively involved in the academic mission of the McGill University Department of Pathology; they will join a diverse team of experts committed to providing innovative teaching to prepare future leaders in pathology and medical science.

The successful candidate will be expected to share departmental service duties in hematopathology, including intraoperative consultations, on-call coverage within the adult pathologists’ team. The practice of the position is Hematopathology.

The incumbent will be expected to participate in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Pathology and demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm, and excellence in quality assurance, quality control and quality improvement programs, demonstrating strong emphasis on multi-disciplinary teaching and expert consultations with interactions with external provincial institutions. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain the highest possible standards of practice, including prompt delivery of services to match established performance indicators and turn-around times.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

  • Hold an MD degree and must hold, or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec;

  • Hold certification in Anatomic Pathology and be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);

  • Have at least one year of post-residency fellowship in hematopathology with expertise in flow cytometry panels and in molecular pathology as it relates to hematopathology;

  • Have demonstrated excellence in teaching, and an interest in clinical research and publication;

  • Have a demonstrated track record of collegiality;

  • Have bilingual language skills (French or English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
