Position Summary:
Florida Atlantic University is seeking an Assistant Director of Residential Education for Recruitment and Training. - Boca Raton, FL.
The Assistant Director of Residential Education for Recruitment and Training is a member of the Residential Education leadership team within the Department of Housing and Residential Education. This live-in position oversees the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, and ongoing development of all Residential Education student staff, including approximately 220 Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants, and seasonal student employees on the Boca Raton and Jupiter campuses. This role also supports and contributes to professional staff recruitment and onboarding processes. The Assistant Director is responsible for implementing a strategic, competency-based approach to training and development that aligns with departmental goals, university values, and the residential curriculum (The Atlantic Experience). This position participates in the second layer of the on-call rotation.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Recruitment and Selection
Lead the annual recruitment, interview, and hiring processes for all student staff roles (Resident Assistants, Front Desk Assistants, seasonal positions).
Organize and implement the RA Expo and Spring Kickoff as major components of student staff selection and onboarding.
Develop recruitment strategies and timelines for off-cycle positions (e.g., Winter Break Staff, Camps and Conferences).
Ensure compliance with university, state, and federal hiring guidelines in collaboration with departmental HR liaisons.
Maintain and audit student staff hiring documentation, including intake forms, Workday records, and onboarding files.
Serve as Chair of the Recruitment and Selection Committee composed of professional and student staff members.
Assess and improve recruitment and selection processes annually.
Training and Development
Lead the development and implementation of a training and development model grounded in the residential curriculum, ensuring that student staff are equipped to support learning, engagement, and community development in the residence halls.
Design and facilitate intentional, competency-based training that connects directly to desired learning outcomes for student staff, including pre-semester training, in-service workshops, and continued professional development opportunities.
Develop and deliver a tiered training curriculum that incorporates both online modules and in-person experiences, with attention to different levels of staff experience and responsibility.
Collaborate with campus partners and subject-matter experts to offer developmentally appropriate and inclusive training sessions that reinforce departmental values and student learning goals.
Coordinate a year-round In-Service Training Calendar that provides ongoing education, skill reinforcement, and reflection aligned with the goals of the residential curriculum.
Provide onboarding and training support for student staff hired mid-year or outside of standard training cycles.
Chair the Training and Development Committee, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and shared responsibility for staff development across the department.
Regularly assess the impact of training initiatives through learning assessments, feedback tools, and performance data, and use findings to inform future planning and improvements.
Performance Management and Administrative Leadership
Create and oversee the student staff performance appraisal system, including performance improvement plans and documentation processes.
Maintain job descriptions, employment contracts, and evaluation tools for all student staff roles.
Audit Workday and departmental systems (StarRez) to ensure staff are appropriately assigned and supervised.
Serve as the point of contact for student staff performance and accountability processes, in partnership with supervisors.
Advise the Student Staff Council, supporting peer leadership and student engagement initiatives.
Incident Response and Risk Management
Participate in the leadership on-call rotation, providing emergency response, incident response and management, and staff support for both Boca Raton and Jupiter campuses, including times when the university is closed.
Respond to high-level incidents involving student welfare, facilities, or conduct issues, following established protocols.
Guide professional and student staff during critical incidents and ensure appropriate referrals and follow-up, using departmental protocol.
As an essential employee, the Assistant Director is expected to remain on-site or report during university closures, holidays, and critical incidents.
Other Duties
Stay current on best practices in residential life, staff leadership, student learning and development, and recruitment and training in higher education.
Provide operational and programmatic support for university-wide events, including Orientation, Family Weekend, Admissions initiatives, athletic events, and campus traditions.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned to meet departmental and university needs.
