JOB PURPOSE

Reporting to the Application Engineering Manager within PHINIA Systems and working in conjunction with Product Engineering, Commercial Account Manager, Fleet Managers and Regional Teams; the Application Engineer supports Delco Remy Alternator and Starter OEM Commercial Vehicle Customers and aftermarket customers as a technical liaison. This person will be the technical interface for current product applications, drive quality improvement activities, cost reduction activities and special projects. They will work with customers to support new applications for existing or new product technologies. This includes customer interface for identification of new opportunities and development of product specifications, product features and validation plan to meet customer requirements. They will direct design and prototype activities required to support the above.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities

Team Focus: Manage day-to-day activities as a member of customer teams working directly with the appropriate Account Manage.  Assist other Application Engineering team members, Fleet Managers, Regional Managers, Product Engineering and Operations within PHINIA.

 

Customer Focus: The Application Engineer interfaces with customer design engineering to drive implementation of PHINIA commercial vehicle products in future vehicle designs. The Application Engineer will be the customer focused technical liaison between the customer and PHINIA Engineering, Quality, and Sales teams reviewing technical progress of projects, evaluating results and suggesting changes in methods, design or equipment where necessary in the development of commercial vehicle products.

 

Technical Focus: The Application Engineer has a strong understanding of electrical and mechanical engineering theory of rotating electrics and commercial vehicle applications.  Application Engineer can convey their knowledge across a wide range of skill sets in a clear and understanding manner.  Participation and support of relevant industry group activities. 

 

Job Duties: 
•Work with customer engineering groups to evaluate and fully understand the customer application and operational requirements. 

•Maintain Direct Contact for all Engineering/Technical Activities for assigned customers that may include: 

  • Application or Release Engineering

  • Create BOR/BOS identifying both compliance to customer specifications

  • Advanced Engineering

  • Service Engineering

  • Quality Engineering

  • Production Control

  • Purchasing


•Liaison for customer vehicle/application data (hub load, engine torque) to PHINIA Engineering and Design for current product documentation and future product development. 
•Network with customer advanced engineering groups to identify future opportunities. 
•Keep PHINIA Engineering up to date with customer technical requirements and sample requirements with written reports and by attending relevant product team meetings.
•Provide training, trouble shooting and vehicle instrumentation (MODAC), and technical services. 
•Assist in developing customer technical presentations and design reviews for customers. 
•Assist Account Manager with RFQ’s (request for quote) and advise PHINIA Engineering/Design with customer requirements. 

•Responsible for determining Change Management system disposition, Engineering Lab Order process and reporting, and maintenance of customer data book applications.

•Organize and facilitate problem solving groups
•Responsible for Application related reports on new test products and field test units. 
•Make contacts and visits annually to review customer manufacturing practices (Plant Visits) and product applications. 
•Attend customer meetings / events as determined by Application Engineering Manager.

 

Qualifications

 

Job Requirements & Skills: 
•Minimum 5 years’ experience in a technical/engineering; customer interface experience preferred. 
•Bachelor’s degree (BSEE or BSME preferred).

•Experience with commercial vehicle manufacturers and/or dealerships is a plus.

•Strong understanding of engineering theory; related to designated engineering field with the ability to apply knowledge to assigned tasks. Knowledge of electro-mechanical systems and commercial vehicle systems preferred. 
•High Level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, internally and externally to the company. 
•Strong analytical, statistical and problem-solving skills; ability to solve complex problems that require considerable judgment. 
•Comprehensive knowledge of plant operations and processes. 
•Product/program management skill; Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously 
•Strong technical skills: manufacturing, product development, supplier interaction and statistical skills. 
•Extensive knowledge of metrics, competitive benchmarks, and standards. 
•High manufacturing engineering and product development technical skills. 
•Computer Literate: Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook. 
•Ability to travel up to 25% of the time to customer and plant sites (regionally and globally)
