Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving counseling and other services for individuals receiving treatment for problems related to alcohol/drug abuse.
Typical Functions
Maintains clinical record documentation and services in compliance with accreditation standards.
Conducts professional screenings, assessments, and intake referrals with clients including, but not limited to, the diagnosed client and family.
Provides effective individual, group and family case management in the area of addiction services, psychological services and educational groups with substance abuse clients and family.
Utilize clinical supervisor to maintain positive work relations as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
Level Descriptor
This is the leadership level of this job family where incumbents administer a treatment program and coordinate activities and services with other programs and services. Responsibilities include the supervision of others.
Education and Experience
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of the completion of two courses in psychology, social work, chemical dependency or substance abuse at the college level and four years of experience in counseling alcohol/drug abuse patients or clients in a recognized alcohol/drug treatment, rehabilitation or counseling program plus one year in the management, supervision, or coordination of a recognized alcoholism treatment, rehabilitation, or counseling program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting the completion of two additional college level courses in psychology, social work, chemical dependency or substance abuse for a maximum of one year of qualifying experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the dynamics of alcohol/drug related problems and their impact upon patients and their families; of the social factors involved in substance abuse; of the principles and techniques of rehabilitation counseling and their application to individuals possessing chemical dependencies; of community resources available to persons with alcohol/drug related problems; of the physiological and psychological effects of chemical dependency; of general social, economic and health problems; of up-to-date theories, principles and techniques of addiction, mental health counseling and managed behavioral health care; of current methods and techniques used in effective prevention and treatment programs; of community organization and resource development; of the functions of municipal, government, industry and service organizations; of modern principles of training and education; of program evaluation methods and report writing; and of grant writing and monitoring. Ability is required to interview and counsel; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to interact with chemically dependent persons; to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing; to speak before large groups; to treat the chemically dependent using group and individual therapy and to evaluate new treatment methods; to conduct screening, assessment, treatment planning and intervention; to conduct several projects simultaneously; to analyze complex problems and adopt an effective course of action; and to effectively supervise the work of others.
