The Salt Lake City Department of Airports is seeking an Engineering Intern for Summer 2026! The Airport Engineering Internship program provides hands-on experience in airport construction management, cost estimating, and capital project delivery within a large and complex airport environment. Interns will work alongside experienced Construction Managers, Inspectors, Engineers, and Architects on active airfield, landside, and facility projects, gaining exposure to both field and office operations that support the Airport’s Capital Improvement Program.
Internship Period: May 4, 2026 – August 28, 2026
Schedule: Full Time (Seasonal/Temporary)
Work Hours: 08:00 – 16:30 (Monday – Friday)
Position Hourly Rate:
$19.00/hr
Typical Duties:
Assist with construction inspection of City contracted projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and standards.
Observe field work, document progress, and help identify deficiencies or safety concerns.
Support Construction Managers and Inspectors with daily reports, photo documentation, and project tracking.
Participate in materials testing coordination and quality assurance reviews.
Assist with project cost estimating and the preparation of Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) estimates for Capital projects, while supporting the development and maintenance of the Airport’s Cost Estimating Database.
Prepare or assist with quantity calculations, payment verifications, and pricing summaries for contractor pay requests.
Attend construction coordination meetings and internal staff briefings.
Apply standard engineering and construction management principles in daily assignments under direct supervision.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university; summer internships may not require concurrent enrollment if the student remains in good standing.
Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management from an ABET-accredited institution, with expected graduation within 18 months.
Possess a valid driver license.
Comfortable interacting with contractors, consultants, and the general public in a professional manner.
Desired Qualifications:
Working knowledge of Office 365 products including Excel and Word.
Familiarity or coursework in construction cost estimating, quantity takeoffs, or project budgeting.
Demonstrated community service, participation in professional or student groups.
Strong communication skills.
Recent graduates (last 12 months) are encouraged to apply as well.
Working Conditions:
Moderate physical activity, including intermittent sitting, standing, and walking.
Work may occur both in office and field environments, with exposure to construction sites and varying weather conditions.
Extended use of computers and visual display terminals required.
