About this role

Responsible for maintaining and repairing the HVAC and refrigeration equipment under limited supervision. Monitors and maintains the chilled water treatment and energy management system to maintain the comfort level of the buildings. May serve as the lead in the absence of the supervisor. This role may work some weekends, during college closings, and is required to report in times of equipment failure or outage.

What a day of an Air Conditioning Mechanic II looks like:

  • Provides guidance, mentorship, and leadership to others. Trains users in the operation of new or modified systems and programs.

  • Provides prompt and courteous service to service requests; Answer, screen, research, inform, advise, record, process, provide progress updates, and follows-up all customer requests efficiently and expeditiously as received by telephone and work orders.

  • Creates and analyzes the mechanical equipment database for life expectancy planning. Maintains a current inventory of supplies and equipment.

  • Maintains, operates, and troubleshoots the refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, and ventilation systems and related equipment. Determines causes of malfunction and replaces or repairs defective parts or elements.

  • Develops an energy utilization program. Collects and analyzes data to establish long range goals.

  • Provides consultation and technical assistance regarding specific matters within area of expertise to internal and external stakeholders. Conducts research and assist others in conducting research.

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs machinery, equipment, physical structure, and pipe and electric systems for the College.

  • Changes the filter in air conditioners, performs plumbing and electrical repairs on heating and air conditioning or other mechanical systems, and analyzes and chemically treats water at the control cooling tower according to prescribed schedule.

  • Prepares required reports for various internal and external requests.

  • Responsible for compliance with appropriate State, Federal, and local safety regulations to include but not limited to OSHA, EPA, and NFPA to ensure a safe learning and working environment. Follows established safety practices.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.

  • 6 years of related work experience in a combination of the following areas: Commercial industrial air conditioning systems; Maintenance, repair and installation of HVAC and refrigeration equipment

Knowledge of:

  • HVAC and refrigeration service and installation techniques

  • Methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of heating and air conditioning equipment

Skilled in:                

  • Attention to detail while maintaining effective time and task management

  • Delivering a high level of customer service

  • Performing with a high degree of accuracy

  • Research and data analysis to arrive at valid conclusions, recommendations and plans of action

Ability to:

  • Interact in a positive manner with diverse populations and varying education levels of students, faculty, staff, and the public

  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing on a regular basis with internal and external customers, build relationships, manage customer expectations, and take responsibility for a high level of service

  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment, capacity to prioritize, process, and execute multiple projects at a high-level of accuracy and attention to detail

Licenses, Registration, Certifications, or Special Requirements:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License.

  • EPA Universal Refrigeration certificate.

Preferred, but not a must:

Education and Experience:

  • 8 years of related work experience in a combination of the following areas: Commercial industrial air conditioning systems; Maintenance, repair and installation of HVAC and refrigeration equipment

  • Energy Management experience

Work Environment and Physical Demand:

  • Lift, carry, push, pull, install or remove objects weighing 20 to 49 pounds.

  • Lift, carry, push, pull, install or remove objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds.

  • Reach and grasp objects.

  • Stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • Stand for extended periods of time.

  • Use of video display terminal.

  • Use of manual dexterity and fine motor skills.

  • Identify and distinguish colors and shades of color.

  • Communicate information orally and in writing.

  • Receive and understand information through oral and written communication.

  • Work with equipment or perform procedures where carelessness may result in injury.

  • Experience exposure to uncomfortable work environment due to extreme temperature, noise level, and other conditions.

  • Risk for occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

  • Operate motor vehicle.

  • Work a fluctuating work schedule.

The minimum base pay for this position starts at $27.78 hourly; however, the offer may vary based on the candidate’s education and experience.
