Job Description Summary:

Summary
The Advancement and Science Communications Officer is a writer and editor in the office, responsible for writing and/or editing material such as development documents and collateral, Op-Eds, speeches and talking points, online communications, video projects, and press releases on research activities at the Institute. To operate effectively, the incumbent builds and maintains strong relationships with Institute faculty, staff, and others.
Responsibilities
- Serves as writer for print and online publications produced by the office.
- Works closely with the Office of Institutional Advancement and in collaboration with Senior Science Communications Officer to write fundraising materials including individualized proposals, case statements, one pagers, white papers, and stewardship reports.
- Writes and edits Executive Communications as needed.
- May at times be asked to attend events in the Cambridge area.
- May create videos and take photographs as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualification
- BA/BS is required; an advanced degree in journalism, communication or science strongly preferred.
- 5+ years of directly related work experience; previous experience in journalism or institutional communications preferred.
- Demonstrated writing and editing skills, with an emphasis on science writing. Development writing experience is strongly preferred.
- Strong writing and editing skills and the ability to generate story ideas for internal and external publications.
- Exceptional communications skills.
- Strong ability to convey the importance of scientific research to a lay audience. Experience working with faculty members to communicate their science strongly preferred.
- Strong ability to work creatively and independently in all aspects of the position.
- Strong ability to work well with others across teams and departments, including clear and diplomatic communication.
- Photography and/or video-making skills desirable.
Whitehead provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the Institute reasonably expects to pay for a position at the time of posting. The pay offered to a selected candidate during hiring will be based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience and education/training, and internal peer equity. This pay range represents base pay only and does not include any other benefits or compensation.
· Pay Range Minimum: $40.85/hr
· Pay Range Maximum: $47.15/hr
