The Advanced EMT is a member of the medical care team trained and certified to render supportive care to the patient at the scene of accidental injury or sudden illness. Transporting patients to the hospital when appropriate and begin corrective treatment as directed under WV State Protocol or instructed by Medical Command.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 

1. Advance Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Certification through WV Office of Emergency Medical Services 

2. Advance Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) through National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians 

3. Basic Life Support (BLS) or obtain within 30 days of hire  

4. ACLS certification within 60 days of hire. 

5. PALS or PEPP certification within 60 days of hire. 

6. PHTLS or ITLS Certification within 60 days of hire. 

7. Valid Driver’s license. 

EXPERIENCE: 

1. Six (6) months patient care 

To be completed as established by department: (Administered at Department level) 

1. Completion of Emergency Vehicle Operations Course 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 

1. ACLS Instructor Certification 

2. CPR Instructor Certification 

3. One-year college with emphasis on health care 

4. Associates Degree 

EXPERIENCE: 

1. One (1) year of patient care experience. 

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.  They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.  Other duties may be assigned.

1. Responsible for responding promptly and efficiently to calls.

2. Administers first aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured persons in the prehospital setting.  

3. Responsible for organized transfer of information to the hospital and accurate, complete and legible report and record keeping while maintaining confidentiality and patient rights.

4. Performs duties of triage area and establishes appropriate priority of care.

5. Performs all duties of an EMT, with additional responsibilities within scope of practice of an AEMT.

6. Operates an ambulance in conjunction with applicable safety policies and traffic laws related to the operation of emergency medical response vehicles. Drives emergency vehicle under extreme conditions such as heavy traffic, inclement weather, and fog.

7. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and restocks as necessary.

8. Reports any required maintenance of equipment or vehicle. Provides minor vehicle maintenance.

9. Prepares reports and ensures proper documentation of incidents.

10. Performs additional duties as assigned.
