This internship provides accounting experience in the financial services industry and the opportunity to learn about the Federal Home Loan Banks’ (FHLBs) integral role as an intermediary between the capital markets and its members, which comprise about 80% of U.S. lending institutions. The FHLBs provide readily available, low-cost funding to members thereby increasing the availability of credit for residential mortgage lending and investment in housing and community development. This unique experience will expose you in a short period of time to a wide range of accounting rules and practices that are applicable to the finance industry.

Areas of Focus:

Investments & Derivatives Accounting – Dive into the complex world of investments, debt, mortgages, and derivatives.  You will get to see how trades are entered, documented, tracked, valued and recorded. Upon completion, you will have a better understanding of the structures, purposes and financial statement impacts of these financial instruments and the associated hedge accounting as well as the operations of an investments and derivatives back office. 

Financial Reporting – Get exposed to the intricacies of income statement monitoring, liquidity forecasting, management and Board reporting, and external reporting including the preparation of regulatory call reports and SEC filings.  See what it takes to produce cash flow statements and footnotes in the real world and see how new technology will improve the process.

Qualifications:

  • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Pursing undergraduate (senior) or graduate degree with concentration in Accounting
  • Self-starter with strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Organized and highly detail-oriented
  • Team player with strong work ethic, positive attitude, and professional demeanor
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills as well as the ability to listen to and accept instruction
  • A written reference from faculty is appreciated though not required
  • Hours Per Week: 40
