REPORTS TO: Head Groundskeeper 

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

COMPENSATION: $19.00 per hour USD

OUR STORY

THE CHICAGO CUBS FRANCHISE is a charter member of Major League Baseball’s National League. Since 1876, the team has won the National League pennant 17 times and was the first team to win back-to-back World Series titles in the 1907 and 1908 seasons. In 2016, the Chicago Cubs made history again when the team won its first World Series in 108 years, ending the longest championship drought in North American sports. Known for its ivy-covered outfield walls, hand-operated scoreboard and famous Marquee sign, iconic Wrigley Field has been the home of the Chicago Cubs since 1914, making it the second oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball.

HOW YOU’LL CONTRIBUTE:

This summer 2024 internship offers the opportunity to learn from and assist the Chicago Cubs Grounds Crew in all aspects of upkeep, care, maintenance and improvement of the Wrigley Field playing surface. Key areas of learning and demonstration include assisting Grounds Crew with the quality and consistency of the mound, home plate, infield skin, Kentucky Bluegrass surface, and ivy while ensuring compliance with Major League Baseball playing standards. 

THE DAY-TO-DAY:

  • Collaborate with Ground Crew staff to learn and demonstrate ability to anticipate and meet a variety of needs on a Major League Baseball playing surface 
  • Learn and demonstrate how to support the upkeep of a sand based, Kentucky Bluegrass MLB playing surface to meet the requirements and expectations of baseball client groups 
  • Ensure that the field is fully prepared and ready to use on game day – free from irregularities in all playing surfaces that may pose safety or performance issues for players – per guidance from Grounds Crew staff 
  • Assist in the preparation of the playing field for practice on game days and facilitate the set-up and breakdown of all equipment, including batting cage, screens, and mats 
  • Assist in tarp cover and removal during rain situations 
  • Ensure field preparation as needed for non-game events 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head Groundskeeper 

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • Currently enrolled in a two or four-year degree program in Turf Grass Management or Crop and Soil Sciences at an accredited university 
  • College training and/or prior internship experience in Turf Management 
  • Knowledge of playing fields and irrigation systems associated with sports complexes 
  • Ability to work non-standard work hours with a variable schedule, to include weekends/holidays 
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, lift 50 pounds, bend, squat, kneel, twist, walk and run on uneven ground, and stand for extended periods of time 
  • Ability to operate grounds equipment in a safe and effective manner
