Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report in office three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].

The Team:

General Motors is seeking innovative and driven R&D Interns to join our Connected Vehicle Experience Research Lab, where we’re advancing smart manufacturing through cutting-edge technologies. This internship focuses on developing collaborative robotic behaviors within the general assembly line, emphasizing human-robot interaction. Interns will lead and execute research projects that generate new knowledge and sophisticated solutions to enhance our manufacturing processes. With a strong foundation in AI and Industry 5.0, and a culture that champions creativity through our “Innovate Now” mindset, this role offers the opportunity to contribute to technologies that may soon be shaping the future of manufacturing.

What You'll Do:

  • Design, develop, and implement connected autonomous mobile robotic (AMR) systems within empirical prototyping environments, with a strong emphasis on translating research concepts into functional robotic prototypes at GM research facilities.
  • Conduct rigorous evaluation and analysis of developed systems, protocols, and application services through both extensive simulations and hands-on experimental testing.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including industry researchers and academic partners, on advanced topics related to wireless-connected mobile robotic applications.
  • Establish and maintain strong peer relationships within GM’s internal wireless communication and robotics technical community.
  • Communicate research progress and results effectively through written reports and oral presentations.
  • Document individual and team research outcomes for internal use and potential external publication.
  • Source and manage experimental materials, equipment, and processes for prototype development and evaluation.
  • Provide technical guidance to team members involved in scientific and engineering research initiatives.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and comply with all corporate training and safety requirements.

Required Qualifications: 

  • U.S. citizenship required to comply with federal government contract provision expressly restricting role to U.S. citizens.
  • Master’s degree required; Ph.D. degree and a strong publication record on these topics are preferable. 
  • Background in mobile networks and wireless communications, particularly on cloud/edge computing.
  • Experience in commonly used robotic simulation platforms (Nvidia IsaacSim/IsaacLab) or other traditional simulators like MATLAB. 
  • Development skills such as C++, Java and/or Python as well as understanding of multithreading programming and real time system development. 
  • Skills in deep learning software development environments, e.g., PyTorch or Tensorflow
  • Preferred to have background in robotics
  • Good teamwork skills and willingness to coordinate the work among several research and engineering colleagues.
  • Excellent communication skills.
